Who killed Hai Min Lee? What Happened To Adnan Syed’s Ex-Girlfriend?

Adnan Syed, 41, was found guilty of killing Hae Min Lee in 1999. On September 19, 2022, his sentence was overturned because new information about the case suggested that he might have been innocent.

On February 9, 1999, it was said that Hae Min Lee’s body was found partially buried in Leakin Park in Baltimore. In 2000, Adnan Syed was accused of killing Lee because he had been the victim’s boyfriend.

By looking at Syed’s cell phone records, the police could figure out that he may have been in the same area as Lee when she was killed. On the other hand, BBC says this is no longer seen as good evidence.

According to the newspaper USA Today, Adnan Syed was given a life sentence for the murder of Hae Min Lee when he was only 19 years old. He asserted his innocence in several appeals, but until this year, none of those pleas were successful. Even though the prosecuting attorneys claim to have two additional suspects, neither one has been identified.

What’s New In The Case Of Hae Min Lee?

Mosby has stated that the prosecution team is working to ensure that justice will be served to Adnan Syed if he is found innocent. She said: “Our prosecutors have been sworn to not only aggressively advocate on behalf of victims of crime but when the evidence exists to exonerate those that have been falsely accused and convicted.”

Syed’s legal team issued a statement saying that additional evidence may have been presented, which was included in the report. Their spokesperson wrote: “(There is new evidence) concerning the possible involvement of two alternative suspects. (Legal parties) have identified significant reliability issues regarding the most critical pieces of evidence at trial.”

The judge, Melissa Phinn, made it clear that even if Syed’s sentence was overturned, he was not innocent of the crime. Instead, there will be a retrial that will be based on evidence that was not taken into consideration during the initial trial.

Judge Phinn’s motion read: “To be clear, the State is not asserting at this time that Defendant is innocent. (The prosecution) no longer has confidence in the integrity of the conviction.”

The BBC reports that the authorities have said that the other two suspects have a history of perpetrating acts of violence against women. Before and after the murder of Hae Min Lee, allegations of violent behavior were made against both suspects, who are believed to be responsible for the crime.
