Joshua Bassett, the 20-year-old singer and star of Disney’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, is sitting in a West Village café, wearing a light purple shirt and enchanting anybody who comes his way. He compliments a waitress on the small rainbow coming out of her apron, saying, “I adore your pin.” A group of young women watches him from outside and stares through the little, unobtrusive window in front of us in just a few minutes.
“I have a sixth instinct for it now,” he says, smiling pleasantly at two other adolescents filming with a hot pink iPhone wrapped in stickers. “We’re resting,” he says as the crowd disperses and their identical little backpacks vanish down the street. Bassett quips that he can’t wait to watch our private lunch stitched together on TikTok.

As Joshua’s fame grew, fans started to become interested in his love life, which led to romance rumors between him and his costar, Olivia Rodrigo. Although the pair never confirmed their rumored relationship, there were many times when they cozied up together during interviews and when Joshua admitted he improvised the “I love you” scene between their HSMTMTS characters, viewers were convinced they were more than friends.
“When you don’t have to think about it and it just flows through you, it’s the most strong feeling in the world.” About that particular time on set with Olivia, he told the Los Angeles Times, “This was really a magical moment.” “Every time, I’d switch it to something which was unique to her and me, and getting her response was the nicest feeling in the world.”
Joshua Bassett Broke Up With Olivia Rodrigo
Joshua Bassett and Olivia Rodrigo, who played on-screen lovers Ricky and Nini in the High School Musical spinoff, were rumored to have dated and then broken up in 2020. Olivia uploaded a video to TikTok in August 2020 showing her performing “All I Want” from the HSMTMTS soundtrack. She captioned the TikTok, “And that’s on failed romances.”
There are various hints in “Drivers License” as to what happened between them, and it appears that Sabrina Carpenter is involved.
Following his breakup with Olivia, Joshua and Sabrina are said to have dated. Joshua shared a TikTok video in November in which he and Sabrina dressed up as Sharkboy and Lavagirl, implying that the two were in quarantine together. In “Drivers License,” Olivia sings of being terrified by a “blonde girl,” which many are mistaking for Sabrina, who has blonde highlights.
Then Joshua made a questionable marketing move when he opted to advertise the launch of his new song “Lie Lie Lie” (which will be released on January 14) on the same day Olivia did.
One of the slideshow’s photos shows him in a car with a blonde girl, which oddly echoes the song “Drivers License.” “Are you trying to steal Olivia’s thunder or what?” one individual wondered.
Joshua did, however, congratulate Olivia on the launch of “Drivers License,” which, if they did date (and if the song is truly about him), is a mature move.
Who is Joshua Bassett dating?
Joshua Bassett, a 20-year-old singer and former member of the cast of High School Musical, is speaking out after Olivia Rodrigo’s song Drivers License reached the top of the iTunes sales rankings in January 2021. In February 2021, Saturday Night Live used Rogrigo’s song in a sketch. Bassett, on the other hand, is speaking out with the release of three new songs, Crisis, Secret, and Set Me Free, which were all composed six months ago.
Bassett remarked in an interview with GQ, “I finally found the confidence to speak up for myself.” Following Rodrigo’s song’s debut, he faced controversy. “I would watch TikToks with like 50 million views and 10 million likes screaming, ‘If I ever see that kid on the road, I’m going to fucking kill him,” he stated in one incident. “Seeing that and then strolling down the street in New York is difficult.”
Rodrigo hasn’t replied to Bassett’s repeated attempts to contact her. He went on to say that the purpose of his new songs isn’t to “expose” someone, but rather to get something off his chest. He told GQ, “It was eating me alive, and I couldn’t keep it in any longer,” adding that he is a different person now than when they dated, but he isn’t ready for love. “Being in a relationship is, in the end, a responsibility. “I’m not sure I’m ready for that,” he admitted.
“Despite appearances, I’ve only had three [relationships]… I’m OK on my own.” I’m not in need of anyone else.”
