VP Kamala Harris assumes Presidential Powers As Biden Goes For A Regular Colonoscopy

As one of the oldest persons to assume the role of President of the United States, Biden faced many questions. He himself stated, that it is a legitimate question for the voters to ask, as fitness for one the most important offices in the world requires exceptional vitality.

President Biden was prepared to answer, as he said during his campaign in 2020, “The only thing I can say is to watch. Watch! Check my energy level, determine whether I know what I’m talking about,” In 2021 he has recently undergone his physical check-up at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. The check-up took place on the cusp of his 79th Birthday.

“This morning, the President will travel to Walter Reed Medical Center for a routine physical. While he is there, the President will undergo a routine colonoscopy,” press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement.

After five hours at the facility, Biden came out giving two thumbs up, signaling positive reactions. “I’m doing great!” said President Biden to a news correspondent, when asked how he was feeling. “I’ve had a great physical and a great House of Representatives vote. Good day,” referring to the positive response garnered by the ‘Build Back Better’ proposal amongst the Democrats.

Since the medical examination involved certain check-ups where anesthesia would have to be administered to the President, the White House revealed that for that duration of the anesthesia, power akin to that of the President would be transferred to the Vice President, i.e. Kamala Harris.

During this brief time, the Vice President will work from her office in the West Wing during this time. This same practice has been adopted in the past as well when President George W. Bush underwent a similar procedure in 2002 and 2007.

As per the Constitutional duty, the White House sent official communications at 10:10 a.m. to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Patrick Leahy, president pro tempore of the Senate, to inform the post holders that President Biden was going under sedation.

The House speaker is second in line to the presidency after the vice president and the president pro tempore of the Senate is third in line under the 25th Amendment laying details of the order of presidential succession.

While Biden has been appearing healthy, his doctor for several decades, O’Connor, made 2 observations, one regarding his threat clearing and a stiffened gate, as compared to the previous year.

“The president has exhibited increasing frequency and severity of “throat-clearing” and coughing during speaking engagements,” O’Connor said post examination. “He has exhibited such symptoms for as long as I have known him, but they certainly seem more frequent and more pronounced over the last few months.”
