Venus Williams is a professional tennis player from the United States. She is thought to be one of the best tennis players of all time. She has won 7 Grand Slam singles titles, 14 women’s doubles titles, and 2 mixed doubles titles. She has won one gold in singles and three in women’s doubles at the Olympics. In mixed doubles, she also got a silver medal. In February 2002, she became the first Black player to reach the top of the rankings. Together with their sister Serena Williams, they have improved the sport.

Richard Williams and Oracene Price had Venus Ebony Starr Williams on June 17, 1980, in Lynwood, California. When Venus was 10, her family moved from Compton, California, to West Palm Beach, Florida, so that she and her sister Serena could go to Rick Macci’s tennis academy. When Venus was 11, Richard Williams pulled her and her sister Serena out of national junior tennis tournaments. At the time, Williams had a 63–0 record on the USTA junior tour and was the best player in Southern California who was under 12 years old. In 1995, Richard took his daughters out of Macci’s academy and started coaching them on his own.

Williams turned pro when he was 14 years old, in 1994. In 1998, she played in the Australian Open for the first time. In the second round, she played against her sister Serena. This was their first match as professional tennis players. Venus beat Serena, but in the third round, she lost to World No. 3 Lindsay Davenport. During their professional tennis careers, the Williams sisters faced each other 24 times from across the net.

Williams has been the best woman tennis player in the world three times, for a total of 11 weeks. She became the first Black woman in the Open Era to reach this ranking on February 25, 2002. Venus Williams has made it to the finals of 16 Grand Slam tournaments. She has also won 14 Grand Slam titles in women’s doubles with her younger sister Serena. In Grand Slam finals for doubles, the Williams sisters have never lost. Venus has won singles titles at Wimbledon five times.

From the 2000 Wimbledon Championships to the 2001 U.S. Open, Venus had one of her best runs as a professional tennis player. In that year, she won four of the six Grand Slam events. From the 2000 Wimbledon Championships to the 2000 Generali Ladies Linz tournament final, she won 35 straight matches, which is the longest winning streak since January 1, 2000. As of the 2020 Australian Open, she has played in 85 Grand Slams. This makes her the all-time leader for both men and women.

Williams has also won one gold medal in singles, three gold medals in women’s doubles, and one silver medal in mixed doubles at the Olympics. Williams has won 49 singles titles, which is only one less than her sister Serena Williams. She is also one of only two active women’s tennis players to have made it to the finals of all four Grand Slams. Her sister Serena is the other player.

In 2007, she started her own clothing line called Eleven. Williams’s first book, “Come to Win: How Sports Can Help You Be the Best at Your Job,” came out at the end of June 2010. She went on talk shows like “The Early Show” and “Good Morning America” to talk about her book.

Yetunde Price, Venus and Serena Williams’ older half-sister, was shot and killed in 2003 near the tennis courts in Compton where the sisters used to play. Price worked for the three Williams sisters.
