Use of Black Students’ Pics in ‘Unattractiveness’ Presentation Causes Sorority’s Disbandment

An Alpha Delta Pi sorority member’s use of Black student football players’ pictures in a presentation “unattractiveness” has caused the sorority’s disbandment from Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina

According to WRAL, the images were reportedly used by the sorority member in a PowerPoint presentation shown last week at a sorority event. She tried to be humorous by rating pictures of the Black football players from the university’s 2019-2020 team.

She reportedly emphasized certain “unattractive” physical features such as “big nostrils, dreadlocks, and big lips.” Then showed images of white students she considered “attractive” in comparison.

Photos of the said presentation eventually leaked through social media. And later on reached to the Black students whose pictures were used. The incident also has come to the school administrators’ attention.

Ja-Quez Harrell, a senior and former football player at the Methodist University, was one of those whose picture was used. He received an image from the presentation the day after it happened.

“My first reaction, other than pure rage, was confusion,” he told The Fayetteville Observer. “What is this? Why is it deemed funny? What was the reasoning? Who else was a part of this? … With everybody that was there, how come nobody stopped it?”

According to Beth Wright, a spokeswoman for the sorority’s national headquarters, the membership of the offending student was suspended by her group. The membership of the university’s sorority chapter has been suspended as well.

“Alpha Delta Pi was outraged and deeply saddened to learn of the racist behavior of a member of our Theta Epsilon chapter at Methodist University,” Wright wrote the Observer. “Her actions directly contradict the values of Alpha Delta Pi.”

“Racism has no place in our sisterhood,” Wright added, “and we will continue to work for inclusive spaces and restorative justice in our chapters, on our campuses, and in our communities.”

Wright said the national organization is discussing with the university chapter’s members to know more about the incident. Wright added that the organization will extend support to those who had been harmed through the presentation.

The university is investigating the incident. The sorority is disbanded indefinitely until the investigation has concluded.

Methodist University’s President Stanley Wearden and its Chief Diversity Officer Quincy Mallot urged students to “support Racial Healing on our campus” by attending on-campus events to be announced in the coming week, in a September 21 statement.
