Gnanasegaram remarked to Tsitsipas, It’s a pleasure to be doing this with someone who entered my life recently. I wouldn’t have ever done it if it wasn’t for that. Paulita, let’s do it

Badosa was then shown on-screen pumping his fist and cheering as the camera cut to a similarly enthusiastic throng. Gnanasegaram went on to tell Tsitsipas that his girlfriend, who was watching the match, had also won her first-round match against Alison Riske-Amritraj.

To which she said, Oh, I just found out, I had no idea, congratulations! Tsitsipas laughed as he addressed Badosa, who stood next to his father in the crowd and smiled and formed her hands into the shape of a heart as he did so.

Badosa later posted a video of Tsitsipas discussing the two of them playing mixed doubles with a heart emoji and a photo of her holding her hands in the shape of a heart to the crowd on her Instagram Story. An Instagram post from the US Open’s official account, titled “They’re not just a couple. They’re a mixed doubles team now!” with two photographs of them doing the identical victory dance.

Tsitsipas had to work hard to get past Austrian Thiem, 29, in the opening round, and it took nearly four years and five sets. Badosa will play Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk on Friday, while Tsitsipas will face British tennis legend Andy Murray on Centre Court on Thursday.
