Tiktok Can’t Be Used On Official Devices In The U.S. House Of Representatives

“With the passage of the Omnibus, which banned TikTok on devices used by the executive branch, the CAO worked with the Committee on House Administration to implement a similar policy for the House,” a spokesperson for the Chief Administrative Officer told Reuters on Tuesday. “With the passage of the Omnibus,” the spokesperson continued, “the CAO worked with the Committee on House Administration to implement the policy.”

The statement that was sent to the staff stated that anyone who currently had the software installed on their device would be contacted about deleting it and that downloading the app in the future was forbidden.

A request for comment from TikTok regarding the new rule was not immediately met with a response from the company. Legislators in the United States of America have proposed implementing a nationwide ban on the app.

According to the administration arm of the United States House of Representatives, the popular Chinese video app TikTok has been banned from all devices managed by the House. This move is a simulation of a law that will soon go into effect in the United States banning TikTok from all devices managed by the federal government.

It was announced on Tuesday by the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the House that the app must be removed from all devices managed by the House because it poses a “high risk” due to a number of security flaws. The message was sent to all members of the House of Representatives as well as staff.

The new regulation comes after a number of state governments in the United States took steps to prohibit the use of TikTok on government-owned devices. Beijing-based ByteDance Ltd. owns TikTok. Because of worries that the Chinese government could use the app to track Americans and restrict content, as of the week prior, 19 states have completely or partially barred the app from being used on devices managed by the state.

The provision to prohibit the app on devices managed by the federal government is included in the $1.66 trillion omnibus spending bill that was passed last week to fund the United States government through September 30, 2023. This provision will go into effect as soon as President Joe Biden signs the legislation into law.
