A statement issued by the agency noted that when deputies arrived, they found indications that an area gated off had been entered into. The police reported that while nothing was taken from the substation, equipment was vandalized, which resulted in a power outage throughout the area.
Later on that morning, a second burglary was reported at a Tacoma Public utility substation located on 224th Street. Similar to the first incident, this one also involved forced entry and equipment damage, although nothing was taken from the location. Puget Sound Energy reported a power outage and a burglary that took place at approximately 2:40 in the morning at 11:25 a.m. as the third incident of a similar nature.
According to the deputies, the third location also had its property broken into, and the equipment was damaged. On Sunday morning, 14,000 homes and businesses in Tacoma did not have power because of a series of break-ins and vandalism that occurred the night before.
Just before 7 p.m. on Sunday, the website poweroutage.us reported that only 2,084 customers of Tacoma Public Utilities and 1,365 customers of Puget Sound Energy lacked access to electrical power. The investigations into all three break-ins are still ongoing, and no suspects have been caught at this time.
