We’ve finally arrived at the beginning of the Brendan Fraser Renaissance. Darren Aronofsky’s new film, The Whale, was revealed with a first-look shot of the actor on Tuesday, A24. The story revolves around Charlie (Fraser), a solitary English teacher with an eating disorder who tries to make amends with his estranged teenage daughter, Elle.
Hong Chau, Samantha Morton, and Ty Simpkins will also star in the film version of MacArthur-winning playwright Samuel D. Hunter’s 2012 hit play of the same name. His first film since 2017’s Mother!, The Whale will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in 2022.

To adapt my play to the big screen has been a labor of love for me,” Hunter previously said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to share this tale with a broader audience since it’s something that’s close to my heart.
For as long as I can remember, ever since I saw Requiem for a Dream as an undergrad trying to write my first play, I’ve admired Darren Aronofsky, and I’m thrilled that he’s bringing his unique talents and vision to this project.”
Last year, Fraser told Unilad, “It’s going to be like something you haven’t seen before.” “That’s about all I can tell you at this time, unfortunately. The outfit and costume were extensive, seamless, and clumsy to put on and take off. To be honest, this is a vast cry from anything I’ve ever done before, but I won’t pretend otherwise… What I do know is that it will leave an indelible impression on the audience.”

As Cliff Steele (and Robotman), Fraser was last seen on Doom Patrol. While he appeared in Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move as a supporting character in 2013, the actor will return to the role of the lead in The Whale, his first feature film role since 2013’s straight-to-DVD Breakout.
Even better news: as the evil Garfield Lynns/Firefly in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and DC’s Batgirl, he’ll be making his Brenaissance debut soon. There is no set release date for The Whale as of yet.
