A “forensic audit” of the 2020 election results in its four largest counties is set by the Texas officials after being pressured by former President Donald Trump.
Although Trump won the state in the 2020 election, he wrote to Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas on Thursday and asked the latter for the results audit.
In a statement, the former president said, “despite my big win in Texas, I hear Texans want an election audit. You know your fellow Texans have big questions about the November 2020 Election.”
As reported by the local news outlet NBC DFW, the Texas Secretary of State’s office confirmed late on Thursday that the results of four counties will be audited, namely Houston, Dallas, Tarrant, and Collin.
Houston and Dallas are usually Democrat-leaning counties, and even if Tarrant has traditionally voted Republican, Joe Biden won the county in 2020.
There was little further information on the process of the audit.
The statement was attributed to the spokesperson for the office, Sam Taylor, as the Secretary of State position has been unoccupied since May.
Texas Republicans have been pressing for the election results audit in the largest counties of Texas, where Joe Biden mostly got the votes.
According to the Democrats and election officials, the Republicans did not show any proof of widespread fraud in the state and that an audit is not necessary.
The decision to start an audit shows that Texas officials gave in to the former president’s pressure, as critics say.
“Donald Trump ordered Gov. Abbott to audit the 2020 Texas election and, like clockwork, TX just initiated an audit of Harris County voters,” Harris County’s Judge Lina Hidalgo wrote on Twitter.
“Democracy isn’t a game. These fake audits are an affront to all voters, & pure pandering to the kinds of extremists that stormed our Capitol.”
An editorial board opinion of a local newspaper, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram, states, Texans now have “a clear picture of who’s in charge of election law in this state”- and it’s not the governor or secretary of state, “it’s Donald Trump.”
Results of the audit in Arizona for the 2020 presidential election confirmed on Friday, that the state was won by Jose Biden.

According to the contentious GOP-led audit, Trump lost 261 votes and Biden gained 99.
Despite the many lawsuits filed by Donald Trump and his allies questioning the 2020 election results, all of them were unsuccessful.
There is no proof of extensive voter fraud in the election according to the Justice Department.
However, the former president keeps promoting unvalidated conspiracy theories about election fraud.
