At this year’s Super Bowl on Sunday, for the first time ever, the famous pregame flyover was performed by an all-female team of pilots. The National Football League (NFL) noted in a tweet that the historic first honors the 50th anniversary of women serving as aviators in the United States Navy.
According to CBS News, there are currently approximately 15 percent of female pilots serving in the United States Navy. The seven female pilots flew in a diamond formation above the State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, which is hosting an NFL game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles.

According to a tweet from the outreach account of the Department of Defense, one of the ladies who took part in the flyover, Lieutenant Caitlin Perkowski, stated that “We stand on the shoulders of giants. There’s a lot of people who make what we do possible…this is for them,”
The accomplishment of the women was lauded by Representative Mikie Sherrill (D-New Jersey), who had previously served as a helicopter pilot in the Navy.
In a tweet, she said, “I’m so proud of this team of women & look forward to watching them make history while celebrating 50 years of women flying in the Navy,” She also added that she was “so proud of this team of women and look forward to watching them make history.”
According to NBC Sports, the pregame ritual was initially carried out for the first time during Super Bowl II in 1968, which was won by the Green Bay Packers over the Oakland Raiders. Since then, it has been a tradition.
