Star Trek Discovery Season 5 Release Date: The U.S.S. Discovery’s crew has battled the Klingons, visited the Mirror Universe, escaped an evil artificial intelligence by going 900 years into the future, learned the truth about The Burn, restored the United Federation of Planets, defeated the Emerald Chain, and made initial contact with species 10-C in just four seasons.
Phew! Without a doubt, the team under Michael Burnham’s direction merits a respite. No way, and you can anticipate seeing them again on Paramount+ for another season of adventure, intrigue, and danger in the early months of 2023.
Star Trek Discovery Season 5 Release Date
Paramount ordered a fifth season in January 2022, and on June 13 that season’s filming began. Only 10 episodes were authorized since Discovery seasons are getting shorter (season 1 had 15 seizures, season 2 had 14 episodes, and seasons 3 and 4 had 13 episodes each). After the outstanding fourth season, which is unquestionably the best of the new (i.e., post-2017) Star Trek thus far, there are high hopes for season 5. Although a debut date is not yet assured, all signs point to the first quarter of 2023.
What Will Star Trek Discovery Season 5 Be About?
Despite the lack of information regarding the Season 5 narrative, based on what one of the show’s producers has said, we can draw some educated assumptions. Discovery’s crew entered the 32nd century in season 3 to discover a galaxy in ruins after a strange occurrence known as The Burn destroyed almost all of the dilithium crystals.

Dilithium’s depletion disrupted the connections between significant worlds because it is required for warp engines. What was left of Starfleet went into hiding after the Federation disintegrated. The United Federation of Planets was finally able to start its lengthy and laborious recovery process when the Discovery crew identified the cause of The Burn.
Following the events of season 4, the Federation accepted Earth and Ni’Var (formerly known as Vulcan but given a new name after the Vulcans and Romulans made peace) as full members once more. Starfleet can concentrate on exploring the galaxy rather than addressing a never-ending stream of threats now that warp travel is operating once more and the Federation is largely unharmed.
In its fourth season, Star Trek: Discovery has established its feet as a narrative, enabling it to perfectly capture the upbeat human spirit for which the franchise is famous. Season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery, according to producer and director Olatunde Osunsanmi in an interview with ScreenRant, “will go back into the past to get farther into the future,” presumably alluding to the show’s inspiration from the adventurous spirit of Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Star Trek Discovery Season 5 Cast
Michael Burnham, played by Sonequa Martin-Captain Green. Anthony Rapp’s Astromycologist Paul Stamets. Wilson Cruz’s Dr. Hugh Culber. Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly, played by Mary Wiseman. Chief Engineer Jett Reno, played by Tig Notaro, and Ensign Adira Tal, played by Nichelle Nichols, will all be returning (Blu del Barrio).
Burnham’s fiancé Cleveland “Book” Booker (David Ajala), who participated in Run Tarka’s scheme to obliterate the Dark Matter Anomaly in contravention of Federation orders, was serving a community service sentence at the end of Season 4. Martin-Green has hinted that Book (and his Maine Coon cat, Grudge) would return in season 5 to save his friendship with Burnham.
Admiral Vance (Oded Fehr, who co-starred with Brendan Fraser in The Mummy films as Ardeth Bay), Lieutenant Commander Keyla Detmer (Emily Coutts), Lieutenant Commander Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo), Lieutenant Ronald Bryce (Ronnie Rowe Jr.), and Gray Tal (Ian Alexander) are all anticipated to make a comeback.
The role of Tilly is also not clear. She left Discovery in Season 4 to work as a teacher at Starfleet Academy, but she was still seen helping Vance evacuate Earth. Does she continue her studies at the Academy or her work with Admiral Vance? How does her role in Starfleet tie into the season 5 storyline, which is currently cloaked in mystery?
What will happen to the other galaxy-wide superpowers now that Earth and Ni’Var, two significant galactic powers, have rejoined the Federation? What about the Klingons, the Cardassians, the Bajorans, and the Dominion? We know that the Ferengi were a part of Starfleet in the 32nd century and were among the dignitaries sent to initiate initial contact with species 10-C.
Will we finally meet their counterparts from the 32nd century in season 5 given that they have been mentioned by name up to this point? The ship’s computer, Zora (voiced by Annabelle Wallis), who developed sentience in season 4, is last but certainly not least.
Aaaand that’s a wrap on #StarTrekDiscovery season 5! Every season I’m in awe of what our team is able to accomplish, and I dare say this was our most ambitious yet. Huge thanks to @CenterWillHold @SonequaMG and our entire, truly amazing, cast and crew. #onedepartment #discofamily pic.twitter.com/Ip5hWk8mvc

This led to a few short-term issues as Zora adjusted to her newfound independence and her objectives, which occasionally conflicted with those of the crew. Will Zora’s personality continue to change in season 5, alienating the rest of the team? Star Trek Discovery Season 5 Trailer
Unfortunately, there isn’t a full trailer because there isn’t a set release date. However, if a release date is announced, the trailer should be released the month before the film’s premiere.
But we did get a great teaser trailer. You can view the video that debuted at New York Comic Con 2022 above. The new season certainly appears to be a lot of fun. Beam us up. Live long and prosper till we see more, and be sure to read our interview with Captain Burnham!
