Shadow and Bone Season 2 Release Date Status on Netflix, When Does It Start?

shadow and bone season 2

Shadow and Bone, an eight-episode fantasy series based on Leigh Bardugo’s bestselling young adult novels and set in her “Grishaverse,” was one of Netflix’s top hits in 2021, according to the company.

The program is a complete thrill, masterfully constructing a highly complex and fanciful universe around a cast of equally fascinating characters, and fans of the novels helped propel the show to the top of Netflix’s Top 10 in its first weekend of release. Along with the fact that there is a whole series of novels to draw inspiration from, this is encouraging news for at least a second season. Here’s what we know thus far about the situation:

Is There A New Season Of Shadow And Bone?

This is fantastic news! Shadow and Bone will return for a second season on Netflix in June 2021, according to the company’s official announcement. However, given the show’s success on Netflix since its debut in April 2021, it was only a matter of time until Netflix completed its plans to bring the Grishaverse back into the spotlight.

More excellent news: Season 2 will begin filming in January 2022, according to the latest available information. As part of the celebration of the production announcement, the cast cooperated on a short film in which they welcomed some extremely exciting new cast members (more on that below).

Shadow and Bone Season 2 Release Date

Netflix normally releases new seasons every year and a half, so we’ll most likely have to wait until late 2022 at the earliest for the next season to premiere. If all goes according to plan, we might be looking at a new season before the end of the year, after the announcement that production will begin in January. We won’t know for sure until closer to the release date, since Netflix is notorious for keeping such information under wraps until the last minute.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 Overview

In all likelihood, the second season will adapt the second novel in Bardugo’s Grisha trilogy, which was the first series to introduce her shared universe to the public.

That book is Siege and Storm, which finds Alina Starkov, the light-wielding Sun Summoner, adrift on the True Sea with only her childhood love Mal and an infamous pirate on her side as she plots to return to Ravka and free the Grisha army from the villainous Darkling.

Siege and Storm are set in the world of Ravka, where Alina Starkov, the light-wielding Sun Summoner, is adrift on the True Sea with The Crow Club, characters from author Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows duology whose tale in the novels takes place after the main trilogy has concluded, are expected to appear in further episodes of the program, given that the first season was based on Shadow and Bone and also included the Crow Club.

After escaping the clutches of the Darkling General Kirigan, Alina, Mal, and the Crows (Kaz Brekker, Inej, and Jesper) have successfully transported the Ravkan ship across the Shadow Fold to safety at the conclusion of Season 1’s season finale.

In this episode, Alina and Mal separate from the Crows and embark on their individual journeys. Their paths will most likely not diverge again (although considering how this show has shocked us so far, we wouldn’t be surprised if they did). Apart from that, the Crows are still required to meet the Grisha Heartrenders Nina Zenik and Matthias Helvar, who is now enmeshed in a conflict of their own:

When Nina, seeking to save the witch hunter Matthias from her fellow Grisha, turned him over to be tried as a slaver in the season one finale, he took this as a betrayal, which she quickly realized was not what he had expected. During the last seconds of the episode, it appears that Kirigan has not only survived the animals of the Shadow Fold but has also managed to bring them under his command.

Netflix announced four very exciting new members of the cast when Season 2 began production: Mortal Kombat’s Lewis Tan as Grisha Heartrender Tolya Yul-Bataar, Anna Leong Brophy as Tolya’s twin sister Tamar Kir-Bataar, Patrick Gibson (The OA) as Ravka’s undercover king Nikolai Lantsov, and Jack Wolfe as young merchant’s son Wylan Hendriks—which means that this season will most likely move

Shadow and Bone Season 2 Plot

Almost certainly, the second season will adapt the second novel in Bardugo’s Grisha trilogy, which established the common universe that she has created. Sailing out on the True Sea with just her childhood sweetheart Mal and a legendary pirate at her side, Siege and Storm follow Alina Starkov’s journey back to Ravka and the liberation of the Grisha army from the evil Darkling, who she has been tasked with defeating.

The Crow Club, characters from author Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows duology whose story in the novels takes place after the main trilogy is ended, would most likely appear again in the second season, given the show’s first season was concentrated on Shadow and Bone but also included them.

Season 1 concludes with Alina, Mal, and the Crows (Kaz Brekker, Inej, and Jesper) fleeing the Darkling General Kirigan and bringing the Ravkan ship over the Shadow Fold to safety. This is the first season of the show. Alina and Mal depart the Crows to follow their individual adventures, and it’s unlikely that their paths will intersect again (although, given how much we’ve been startled by this show so far, we wouldn’t be surprised if they do).

Aside from that, the Crows still have to contend with the likes of Grisha Heartrender Nina Zenik, and Matthias Helvar, who are struggling with their own problems: When Nina, in an attempt to keep the witch hunter Matthias safe from her fellow Grisha, gave him up to be tried as a slaver in the final episode of the first season, Matthias regarded this as a betrayal, which Nina quickly realized was not the case.

It looks that Kirigan has not only survived the beasts of the Shadow Fold, but he has also managed to bring them under his control in the last minutes of the episode.
