After Democratic New York City Mayor Eric Adams volunteered to teach Florida’s Republican governor about the city’s “values,” the DeSantis administration shot back. Adams criticized DeSantis on the first day of the Florida governor’s pro-police trip across cities ruled by the opposition party in the City that Never Sleeps.

Adams wrote on Monday –

“Welcome to NYC, [DeSantis], a place where we don’t ban books, discriminate against our LGBTQ+ neighbors, use asylum seekers as props, or let the government stand between a woman and health care”

“We’re happy to teach you something about values while you’re here,” the New York City mayor continued.

“Nice rhetoric – but here’s reality: More Americans fled NYC than any other metro area last year”

“More Americans moved to Florida than any other state.”

Pushaw said –

“You know this, Mayor Adams, and you’ve talked (accurately) about crime pushing people out of NYC,”  “Florida’s crime rate meanwhile is at a 50-year low.”

“Maybe it’s you who can learn from [DeSantis]?”

DeSantis kicked off his visit on Monday morning by meeting with law enforcement personnel and leaders from law enforcement unions in a diner located in Staten Island, which is known for its conservative political leanings.

According to his political team, the governor will then travel to the suburb of Philadelphia known as Fort Washington, as well as Elmhurst, Illinois, which is located close to Chicago. While there, he will meet with local law enforcement officials including sheriffs, police chiefs, and other officials.

In Florida, where he recently sponsored legislation to improve bail laws, toughen penalties for sex criminals, and other anti-crime measures, DeSantis is anticipated to brag about his efforts to support law enforcement and reduce crime in the state.

According to the office of the governor, DeSantis implemented the largest recruitment package in the state’s history for law enforcement officers during his first year in office. This package included the provision of signing bonuses of $5,000 to law enforcement officers from blue states who were willing to relocate to Florida.

A backlash erupted after it was announced that DeSantis was going to visit Chicago the following week, prompting the Democratic governor of Illinois, J.B. Pritzker, to criticize the Florida governor as “homophobic.”

There is much speculation surrounding the possibility of DeSantis running for president of the United States, a move that would pit him against his old political mentor, former President Donald Trump, in the increasingly competitive Republican primary.
