Republicans Want To See Who Visited Biden At Home, But Not Trump

After classified materials were discovered in Vice President Joe Biden’s office and garage, the Republican chairman of the House Oversight Committee ordered visitor records for Biden’s home in Wilmington, Delaware, on Sunday. Biden’s residence is located in Delaware.

Representative James Comer wrote in a Sunday letter to White House Chief of Staff Ron Klain that “without a list of individuals who have visited his residence, the American people will never know who had access to these susceptible documents.” Comer’s words were included in the letter addressed to Ron Klain.

Republicans have attempted to draw parallels between the documents scandal involving Joe Biden, which pertains to information from his time as vice president, and the investigation into former President Donald Trump, who is currently the subject of a federal criminal investigation into how he handled classified documents following his departure from the White House in 2021. However, legal experts point out significant differences between the two situations.

Comer stated that he would not seek visitor logs for Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, where more than one hundred classified documents, some labeled top secret, were discovered during an FBI search. Comer said he would not seek these logs.

During an interview on Sunday with CNN, he made the following statement: “I don’t feel like we need to spend a lot of time since the Democrats have done that for the past six years.” Trump just announced that he will run for president again in 2024, and the consensus is that Joe Biden will be his Democratic opponent.

The revelations about Biden came to light the week before last when his legal team stated that they had discovered secret documents at his residence in Delaware relating to his time while serving as vice president in the Obama administration. On Saturday, his attorneys informed him that they had discovered five additional pages at his residence.

According to a report broadcast on Sunday by CBS, which cited an unnamed law enforcement source, some of the about ten documents discovered at the Penn Biden Center think tank contained top-secret information. Regarding the report, the White House declined to comment. A spokeswoman for Biden’s personal lawyer, Bob Bauer, did not reply to a request for comment.

There is no legal necessity in the United States for presidents of the United States to reveal guests who come to either their House or the White House. The revelation of the identities of official visitors to the White House was resumed under the administration of Joe Biden, and the first batch of information was made public in May of 2021. The previous president, Donald Trump, ended the practice not long after he took office in 2017 when he was still in office.

TRUMP VS. BIDEN DOCUMENT ISSUES

On Friday, Republicans in the United States House of Representatives initiated an investigation into how the Justice Department handled sensitive materials that were inappropriately maintained and were in Biden’s possession. In addition, Comer’s committee is looking into the matter.

This investigation comes as President Trump is already the subject of a separate FBI criminal investigation into allegations that he mishandled secret information after leaving office.

In the matter involving Vice President Joe Biden, the president’s legal team reported to the National Archives and the Justice Department that a small number of documents had been discovered at a think tank in Washington and then at Biden’s residence in Wilmington.

In the instance of Donald Trump, the National Archives worked tirelessly for more than a year after he left office in an unsuccessful effort to acquire all of the records that the former president had kept for himself. When President Trump delivered 15 cartons of documents to the National Archives in January 2022, officials determined that the papers included sensitive information.

After the problem was brought to the attention of the Department of Justice, Trump’s attorneys turned over other materials taken from their client’s House in Mar-a-Lago and stated that there were no other records to be found on the property.

It found out that was not the case. At the end of the investigation, the FBI was able to retrieve an additional 13,000 papers from the estate, approximately 100 of which were tagged as classified.

The “Mar-a-Lago Act” was sponsored by Democrats in the House of Representatives in 2017, and it would have required President Trump to reveal visitors to his Florida property periodically. However, neither the House nor the entire Congress voted on the bill.

Rep. Adam Schiff, a Democrat and the outgoing chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, suggested that Congress ask the U.S. intelligence community for an assessment on whether or not any documents from either Trump or Biden posed a threat to the nation’s security. Schiff was speaking as the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee.

On the program “This Week” on ABC, Schiff was quoted as saying, “I don’t think we can dismiss the idea without knowing more of the facts.”
