On Monday, a group of thirteen Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives vowed to take retaliatory action against their Republican colleagues in the Senate if those colleagues vote for a massive omnibus spending package before the expiration of the Democrat-controlled Congress in the lame-duck session rather than waiting until the Republicans regain a majority in the House in the new year.
“We are obliged to inform you that if any omnibus passes in the remaining days of this Congress, we will oppose and whip opposition to any legislative priority of those senators who vote for this bill – including the Republican leader,” the legislators threatened in a statement. “We are obligated to inform you that if any omnibus passes in the remaining days of this Congress,” they continued, “we will oppose and whip opposition to any legislative priority of those senators.
“We will oppose any rule, consent request, suspension voice vote, or roll call vote of any such Senate bill, and we will otherwise do anything in our power to thwart even the most insignificant legislative or policy efforts of those senators,” the statement read. “We will oppose any rule, consent request, suspension voice vote, or roll call vote of any such Senate bill.”
To prevent a government shutdown at the end of the week, bipartisan negotiators have reportedly crafted a financing measure for the government that totals $1.7 trillion and includes many earmarks for various special interests. This amount would be added on top of the record yearly military spending of $858 billion, which was approved by the House and Senate just the week before last.
The letter stated, “Senate Republicans have 41 votes to stop this and should do so now to show the Americans who elected you that they weren’t wrong.” The letter said, “Senate Republicans have the necessary 41 votes to stop this and should do so now.”
Many members of the House Freedom Caucus, such as Representatives Chip Roy and Byron Donalds, and some newly-elected members who will take office in the following session, such as Anna Paulina Luna and Eli Crane, have signed the letter.
Other signatories include representatives from both parties. They harshly criticized Republicans who supported the omnibus package for rushing through irresponsible spending at the eleventh hour, even though the country is experiencing record inflation and a national debt quickly surpassing the GDP’s size.
The lawmakers say that the government has misused its power and disregarded the American people, mainly via a politically weaponized FBI, the border issue, and “blank cheques” to Ukraine. If the spending were to be rushed through, it would effectively constitute a reward for the administration.
Their request comes after Roy publicly appeals to Mitch McConnell, the minority leader in the Senate, to put a hold on significant spending bills until the Republican Party gains a majority in the House of Representatives. In under two weeks, the new Republican majority in Congress will take their oath of office.
When I say this, I’m looking at Mitch McConnell; please get your work done, Leader McConnell! “I want you to do your job, and I want you to fulfill the wishes of the American people, who gave a majority of the House of Representatives to Republicans,” he told them. “And I want to put a STOP to this bill.”
