July 2016: When They Meet

At first, the pair would only confirm that they had met through acquaintances in the summer of 2016, but two years later, E! News reported that Harry had met Meghan through his childhood friend Violet von Westenholz.

When Von Westenholz worked in Ralph Lauren’s PR department, she first met Meghan. The Suits star had been living in London for some time and mingled with “the high society set really easily,” the person said. After Harry confided in his pal about his d@ting woes, Meghan entered her head.

The Prince was pleasantly pleased when he first met his future wife because he had never watched Suits. Instant attraction existed. The couple made it clear in Harry & Meghan that they first spoke on Instagram before starting their first date.

Harry explained, “Meghan and I connected on Instagram. “I was scrolling through my feed and someone who was a friend had this video of the two of them, it was like a Snapchat, and it’s … with doggy ears and … that was the first thing, it was like who is that?”

Then, he continued, “And then we got each other’s numbers and we were just constantly in touch, and I went, ‘Let’s meet.’” They ultimately met at 76 Dean Street in London. Meghan recalls that her now-husband was half an hour late, but he was “so sweet” and “genuinely so embarrassed” for his tardiness.

“He was just so fun,” Meghan added. “Just so refreshingly fun. And that was the thing, we were like childlike together.” Harry told the tale of their initial dates in an interview shortly after they were engaged.

“We met once and twice back-to-back, two dates in London, last July,” he said. “Beginning of July. Then, it was three maybe four weeks later that I managed to persuade her to join me in Botswana, and we camped out with each other under the stars.”

“It was definitely a set up, it was a blind date,” Meghan continued. She continued by saying that she just wanted to date a good person and didn’t care that Harry was a member of the British royal family.

“Because I’m from the States, you don’t grow up with the same understanding of the royal family,” she said. “And so, while I now understand very clearly there’s a global interest there, I didn’t know much about him, so the only thing I asked her when she said she wanted to set us up—I had one question—I said, ‘Well, is he nice?’

Because if he wasn’t kind, it didn’t seem like it would make sense. And so we went, and had met for a drink, and then I think very quickly into that said, ‘Well, what are we doing tomorrow? We should meet again.’”

November 2016: When Meghan and Harry’s Relationship Published

A few months later, Kensington Palace was virtually forced to formally admit after the tabloids learned of their relationship swiftly. In reality, Harry’s public admission that he and Meghan were d@ting was an attack on the “abuse and harassment” and prejudice she had endured at the hands of the media.

“It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm,” the statement reads. “He knows commentators will say this is ‘the price she has to pay’ and that ‘this is all part of the game.’ He strongly disagrees. This is not a game – it is her life and his.”
