If you were planning on purchasing a new graphics processing unit (GPU) from Nvidia’s 40-series lineup this year, you might need even more savings than you had anticipated. This is because there has declared that it intends to “Un launch” the previously planned and more affordable 12GB RTX 4080 model. Instead, next month will see the arrival of only the more expensive and speedier 16GB variant of the RTX 4080.
Nvidia made the long-awaited announcement of their next generation of high-end PC graphics cards a few weeks ago. This came after a great deal of anticipation and many rumours. In November, NVIDIA intended to release two distinct variants of the RTX 4080 GPU: a 16GB RTX 4080 with a price tag of $1199 and a 12GB RTX 4080 with a price tag of $899. During that same event, it also revealed a $1600 4090.
Many others voiced their opinion that the fees being asked were excessively high, which is about what you may have anticipated. And now, the “lowest” of these brand-new, expensive cards won’t even be available for purchase the following month.
According to an announcement by Nvidia today, the business will “unlaunch” the 12GB RTX 4080. It argues that this is because having two separate GPUs that are both designated “RTX 4080” is too “confusing,” even though the card itself is “amazing.” This is a reiteration of criticism that was voiced by a significant number of customers after the recent announcements on the 40-series. A considerable number of customers stated that the inferior specifications of the 12GB RTX 4080 were more comparable to a hypothetical “4070” or “4079” card.
Kotaku has contacted Nvidia to enquire about the cancellation of the 12GB RTX 4080 variant and its potential future.

In a brief statement published on the company’s official website, Nvidia explained that the company would be “pushing the ‘unlaunch’ button on the 4080 12GB.” The RTX 4080 16GB is a great graphics card that will bring joy to gamers worldwide on November 16th.
It is difficult not to see this move as a way for Nvidia to push more of its customers, many of whom have been delaying the purchase of a new GPU for a few years now while cards remained hard to buy, into spending more money on a more expensive card. Of course, it is difficult not to see this move as a way for Nvidia to push more of its customers into spending more money on a pricey card.
And although the fact that early testing of the more affordable 12GB version of the 4080 had demonstrated that it was a great deal slower than the more costly 16GB variant, having at least one alternative that cost less than $1,000 was a welcome convenience. But that is no longer the case. It is impossible to predict what will occur, but Nvidia may rename the 12GB RTX 4080 graphics cards to 4070s.
