After the second earthquake in as many weeks slammed Northern California on Sunday morning, officials are back to cleaning up the damage caused by the quake, which cracked buildings and roadways.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the magnitude of 5.4 occurred at a depth of around 19 miles and was quite shallow. According to the USGS, the epicenter was located approximately 30 miles south of Eureka and 9 miles southeast of Rio Dell.
On December 20, a 6.4 earthquake struck the region roughly 125 miles south of the Oregon border. As a result of this quake, two people lost their lives. The mayor of Rio Dell, Debra Garnes, stated that as a result of the earthquake on December, 27 of the town’s properties were given red tags, indicating that they were hazardous due to damage, while 73 homes were shown yellow tags. She stated that some structures sustained additional damage on Sunday and may need demolishment.
“We are kind of beginning again – we had moved from our reaction to recovery, and now we are basically in both,” Garnes said in an interview with CNN’s Pamela Brown on Sunday. “We had moved from our response to recovery, and now we are basically in both.” “The southern part of town was hit rather severely this time, and we need to be ready to respond,” said one of the characters in the story.
According to Garnes, the earthquake that occurred on Sunday shook her house. “It was out of control. According to Garnes, who spoke to CNN, “the earthquake appeared to be more powerful this time.” “It was less time, but there was more bloodshed. My refrigerator was shifted forward by two feet. The contents of the refrigerator were retrieved. My wall is damaged as a result of its force of it, and there is a crack in it.”
According to Garnes, the earthquake caused a fracture in the wall of a neighbor’s home. The mayor stated that “pockets” of the town’s power have been lost and that thirty percent of the water supply has been cut off. She said a crack was 35 feet long on one of the main highways in the town.
On the other hand, the mayor stated that there had been a “tremendous response from the community,” including assistance from neighboring towns and state and local government organizations. According to Garnes, “literally everyone is trying their best to assist us get through this.”
According to a statement released by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, the earthquake that occurred on Sunday caused the power to be cut off for approximately half of Rio Dell’s population. It was reported that the American Red Cross had opened a shelter for residents affected by the earthquake.
The Office of California Governor Gavin Newsom stated that it was monitoring the quake’s impact and that it would provide updates as they were available. “Stay safe – check gas and water lines for damages or leaks, prepare for aftershocks, and remember to drop, cover, and hold on,” the office stated in a tweet. “Drop, cover, and hold on,” the message continued.
