Watch out, people in their mid to upper 70s! Nikki Haley, the newest Republican presidential candidate, wants to know how smart you are.
The former U.N. ambassador and governor of South Carolina officially started her campaign on Wednesday. She called for “mandatory mental competency tests for politicians over 75 years old,” among other things.
This line was probably meant to please Republicans who think that President Joe Biden, who is 80 years old, has dementia (while also being a devious criminal and an all-powerful leftist singlehandedly transforming America into a socialist hellscape). But it was also a shot at 76-year-old candidate and former President Donald Trump, who is also running for office, as well as a large part of the Republican Party’s most reliable voters.
A Pew Research Center study of the 2020 presidential election found that voters aged 75 to 92 were the only ones who clearly chose Trump over Biden, 58% to 42%. As a liberal, I can see why you might want to check the mental health of anyone who voted for Trump, but it doesn’t seem like a good idea to start your Republican campaign with a lot of ageism.
Haley 2024 – Unwise!
Given the results of a recent poll conducted by Reuters and Ipsos, “Unwise!” might easily serve as Haley’s campaign slogan. The study found that she has the backing of a relatively modest 4% of registered Republicans. And this was before she made the comment that folks in their mid-70s would be incapable of doing their jobs.
During her address, Haley sounded like she was reciting a “Every Republican Talking Point from the Last 40 Years” Mad Lib. She called for “a new generation of leadership” while doing so.

The Governor Of South Carolina, Who Is Also A Republican Presidential Candidate, Says Racism Is Over!
Haley was the first person of color to run for the Republican nomination for president. She said that America is not a racist country. While she was talking, a white man in Buffalo was being given a life sentence for killing 10 Black people in a racist mass shooting. During the sentencing, the man said, “I shot and killed people because they were Black.”
Between that and the fact that a Gallup poll found that 64% of Americans “believe racism against Black people is widespread” in the US, I’d say the jury is still out on that whole “racist country” thing.
Hi, I’m Nikki Haley, and I’m not old like some people
But setting all stump-speech pablum aside, Haley made clear she’s going to leverage her age for advantage in the primary race. At 51, she’s 24 years away from requiring the kind of mental competency test she suggested, a fact I’m sure will weigh heavily on the minds of voters who think the average 75-year-old should be set adrift on an ice floe.
