Students at Jones College Prep in Chicago’s South Loop are planning a walkout on Monday because they don’t like how the school dealt with a student who dressed up as a Nazi soldier for Halloween.
A post on social media about the plan to walk out on Monday afternoon says that it is about “how the administration ‘handles’ racial and ethnic discrimination at Jones.”
On Halloween, a student was spotted walking about campus in what appeared to be a costume that was inspired by a Nazi soldier’s outfit. The kid can be seen goose-stepping across a stage in video recordings that have been published on Twitter. Meanwhile, numerous others can be heard loudly booing him.
Isis Gullette, a senior, was quoted as saying, “We Instantly Felt Disturbed by What We Saw.”
According to a report published on Friday by Block Club Chicago, the principal of Jones High School, Joseph Powers, sent an email to the school’s faculty and staff earlier this week in which he described a student’s costume as “an East German (communist era) border guard uniform probably from the 1980s.”
Powers went on to say, “I tried to explain the context and historical period of the outfit to the students that spoke with me, but it appears that the student who wore the uniform may have told individuals that it was from the 1940s.” I had a conversation with him this afternoon and went through the same information with him, as well as the possible conclusions that others may have taken.
Thursday, Powers wrote the following in a separate email that he sent out to the Jones community:
“Let me state unequivocally and categorically that what took place was hurtful to a significant number of our students and staff members who identified this as an act of antisemitism. Permit me to also state unequivocally and unequivocally that intolerance, racism, and behaviours based on bias have no place in our school…
We want you to know that by the protocols for processing bias-based damage, we are addressing this problem directly with the member of our school community who wore the costume.
