Minneapolis Wedding Veiled in Grief as 5 Friends Perish in Car Crash

According to investigators, a driver ran a red light and struck the vehicle of five friends, all under the age of 21, on Friday in Minneapolis.

A Minnesota State Patrol policeman obsefrved the fast vehicle on Interstate 35 just before the collision, but the car left the road before the patrol could initiate a traffic stop.

A press release from the Minneapolis Police Department was forwarded to USA TODAY. “The vehicle then proceeded through a red light at the intersection of [Lake Street and 2nd Avenue] and crashed into another vehicle occupied by four adult females and one juvenile female,” the statement read.

An adult male got out of the car and ran away from the scene, to Minneapolis police, who attended to the collision at around 10:12 p.m. local time. He was subsequently apprehended and sent to the Hennepin County Medical Center for a medical evaluation.

Derrick Thompson, the driver, was detained and jailed for m*rder on Monday, Minneapolis police reported in a statement.

At the site, all five victims were pronounced deαd. The Minneapolis Fire Department and Metro Transit Police also arrived at the scene.
