Everything came together at the conclusion of Lovecraft Country Season 1. A snarling monster, bionic arms, a tonne of blood, and some shocking deaths were among the highlights of the show. After an absolutely wild finale, the sins of America’s racist past were exposed in the big HBO hit of 2020, “American Horror Story: Freak Show.”

But who knows what’s going to happen after that.

Unfortunately, there isn’t anything! HBO announced in July 2021 that Lovecraft Country would be canceled after one season, sparking widespread outcry among the show’s fans. Listed below is everything we know about the show’s cancellation, as well as what we could have seen in Season 2.

Lovecraft country season 2 canceled

The sudden cancellation of Lovecraft Country has sparked a great deal of speculation among the general public, especially since HBO has made no official announcement as to why the show was canceled. Because showrunner Misha Green had been working on Season 2 as recently as February, this was not a mutual decision between the creatives and the network.

Green, on the other hand, might be the reason why Lovecraft isn’t returning at all. Tinderbox: HBO’s Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers, an oral history of the network by James Andrew Miller, includes a section devoted to some of the behind-the-scenes drama from the show, which is available for purchase here. It was difficult for other writers to contribute to the project because Green, according to Miller, created a “hostile” work environment for them to work in. In an interview to promote the book, he went into greater detail:

In terms of its visual design, its narrative, and what I would consider being an exceptional marriage of storytelling and music, Lovecraft was a beautiful show to behold. When the show was canceled, there were two main theories that were put forward. One reason was that it had become prohibitively expensive. The second problem was that there was no compelling vision for the upcoming season.

It turns out that neither of these was the real reason. The show’s environment, according to several sources both within HBO and outside the company — including those who worked on it and those who represented people on it — was not a healthy one. In some ways, it was a double-edged sword for HBO: not only was it losing a show that was such an outlier in terms of what it was trying to say, but it was also losing a showrunner who was Black — and a female Black showrunner — which is not something that happens on a regular basis, and people were incredibly excited about that. So, once again, the word that comes to mind is “sadness” at the fact that it was unable to continue.”

These rumors have not been confirmed by anyone who was involved with the production of the show itself. Star Courtney B. Vance expressed his disbelief at the prospect of such a promising show being canceled so soon after its premiere. Because of the amount of money spent on special effects for the show’s visually stunning first season, as mentioned in Miller’s quote above, Lovecraft Country’s budget was most likely a contributing factor to the show’s poor performance.

At The End Of Lovecraft Country Season 1

While projecting a Season 2 storyline is tough, the Season 1 conclusion gives us a hint.

Christina (Abbey Lee) sacrificed Atticus (Jonathan Majors) in the season 1 finale of Lovecraft Country. Christina feared she had killed Leti (Jurnee Smollett), but protective magic brought her back.

Ji-Ah (Jamie Chung) utilizes her Kumiho skills to keep both Atticus and Christina together and undo the rite. Finally, white people lose their magic. They are followed by Hippolyta (Aunjanue Ellis), Montrose (Michael K. Williams), and Leti. Atticus’ final message to Montrose was to beg him to look after his unborn kid.

But Lovecraft Country is far from over. Dee kills Christina, who is stuck under rubble, by revealing a bionic left arm. Dee also controls the Shoggoth that saved Atticus and Leti in previous episodes. Last seen in Lovecraft Country, the Shoggoth roars in the moonlight, shrouded Dee.

To Green, the season finale was “about traveling towards this hero’s journey story, about destiny: You’re the one, and you’re destined to do something.” “This idea of Atticus knowing he has to die and making a choice for the greater good was incredibly intriguing to me and the room. We only discussed what that sacrifice may be for, and how inverting the magic world’s power structure appealed to us.”

It’s impossible to know exactly what will happen in Season 2, but we can make some educated guesses based on what happened at the end of Season 1.

Atticus (Jonathan Majors) was sacrificed in the Season 1 finale of Lovecraft Country by Christina (Abbey Lee), who wanted to use Atticus’ blood to become immortal. With this, Christina killed Ruby (Wunmi Moskau) and thought she killed Leti until another protection spell brought Leti back to life.

Ji-Ah (Jamie Chung) utilizes her Kumiho skills to keep both Atticus and Christina together and undo the ritual, thereby thwarting Christina’s ambitions. All white folks lose their magic in the end. Leti, Ji-Ah, Hippolyta (Aunjanue Ellis), and Montrose (Michael K. Williams) take Atticus’ body until the end of the episode’s last shot. Montrose was asked to look after Atticus’s unborn kid in his parting communication with Atticus.

However, the story of Lovecraft Country is far from over. Dee kills Christina, who is stuck under rubble, by revealing a bionic, Cable-like left arm in the season’s final moments. Atticus and Leti were saved by the Shoggoth, which Dee now controls. A hooded Dee stands at attention above the Shoggoth as it roars in the night sky.

This hero’s journey story and destiny: You’re the one and you’re supposed to do something were a lot of our discussions in the room,” Green told Rolling Stone of the season finale. “This idea of Atticus knowing he must die and making a choice for the greater good was intriguing to both me and the other people in the room. We were just talking about the potential use of such a sacrifice, and how appealing it would be to us if it might help to shift the balance of power in the world of magic in our favor.”

Lovecraft Country Season 2 Plot Be Like

Misha Green resorted to social media after the termination of Lovecraft Country. In February of the following year, she finally began posting portions of the series bible she had been working on. Lovecraft Country: Supremacy would be the season 2 title. Tribal Nations of the West (covering California and as far east as Michigan), Whitelands (a belt running from the top half of Texas to the bottom half of Pennsylvania and New Jersey), New Negro Republic (the bottom half of Texas all the way up to the Atlantic coast), and Jefferson Commonwealth (the entire state of Virginia) were all on Green’s fictitious map of the US (the northeast, down to the top half of Pennsylvania and New Jersey).

Season 2 would feature a new map of the United States, dubbed the “Sovereign States of America,” which would depict the country as we know it now. In addition, Green had been pondering whether or not to take Lovecraft Country in a different artistic route than the first season, which had a strong horror tinge. He ultimately decided against it.
