On the evening of Monday, October 22, a lone gunman entered a classroom building on the campus of Michigan State University and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of three people and the injuries of five others. According to the accounts of the police, the incident occurred.
Soon after midnight, Deputy Chief Chris Rozman made the announcement that the suspect had been found dead off campus at Michigan State University from a gunshot wound that appeared to have been self-inflicted. Rozman made the announcement shortly after midnight.
“This truly has been a nightmare that we are living tonight, but we have remained laser-focused on the safety of our campus, our students, and our surrounding community,” Rozman said. Sparrow Hospital is currently providing medical care for all five of the victims who were injured; some of the victims are suffering from injuries that are regarded as being potentially fatal.
The shooting started at 8:18 p.m. inside Berkey Hall, which is located on the northern end of campus at Michigan State University and is home to the Department of Sociology. The school administration issued a “shelter-in-place” order at 8:31 in the evening, instructing students to remain inside the building and to barricade themselves.

The shooter reportedly traveled from Berkey Hall to the MSU Union, which is located only a short distance away, and opened fire once they arrived there. Classes at MSU have been canceled for the next two days, and students have been strongly discouraged from coming to school on Tuesday due to the cancellation of classes.
Law enforcement officers from a variety of agencies, including the FBI, ATF, and the Michigan State Police, were giving assistance on the campus. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated that there be temporary flying restrictions in place above the Michigan State University campus until Wednesday.
Ben Finkelstein, a senior at Michigan State University, stated that he hid below his bed after hearing what he referred to as “two weak gunfires” earlier in the evening.
Another student at Michigan State University who is also a senior stated that she is in good physical condition but that she is “totally afraid.”
