Christine Baumgartner and Kevin Costner are divorcing. According to PEOPLE, Baumgarten, 49, has filed for divorce. The actor’s representative issued the following statement to PEOPLE:
“It is with great sadness that circumstances beyond his control have transpired which have resulted in Mr. Costner having to participate in a dissolution of marriage action.”
The representative continued, “We ask that his, Christine’s, and their children’s privacy be respected as they navigate this difficult time,”
The news was initially reported by TMZ. In an interview with PEOPLE in November, Costner praised his wife, saying,
“My wife does things that just completely… It just helps. The house is prettier because of her. Everything is warmer because of her. There’s these little things that she does and I think it’s the power of love, but that she makes her home that way.”
In September 2004, the couple was married. They now have three kids: sons Cayden, 15, and Hayes, 14, as well as daughter Grace, 12. In addition, Costner, 68, has four older children from prior relationships: sons Joe and Liam and daughters Lily and Annie.
Baumgartner was open with Costner about his desire to have children. When they first started dating, Baumgartner reportedly said to Costner, “If you’re going to be with me, you need to know that kids are at the end of the road for me with you, if that’s going to happen.” Costner revealed this to Extra.
Before giving Costner an ultimatum, Baumgartner and Costner dated for six years. Before deciding “I’m not going to lose her because I’m afraid,” Costner stated, “there finally came a moment where, maybe this doesn’t go forward.”
Speaking to PEOPLE about their relationship during the pandemic, the actor gushed about his wife, stating, “Our partnership has really come into focus about what we do for each other and how we deal with our family.”
