He was born Philip John Clapp in Knoxville, Tennessee on March 11, 1971. He is better known professionally and popularly as Johnny Knoxville. He has two older sisters. His father Philip was a car and tyre dealer, while his mother Lemoyne was a Sunday school teacher. Knoxville attributes his acting bug to his cousin, singer-songwriter Roger Alan Wade, who gave him a copy of Jack Kerouac’s On The Road. He graduated from Knoxville’s South-Doyle High School in 1989 and later relocated to California to pursue an acting career.

On May 15, 1995, Knoxville married Melanie Lynn Cates, and the couple has a daughter, Madison, born in 1996. Knoxville filed for divorce in July 2007; their divorce was finalised in July 2009. His early acting work consisted primarily of commercials and cameo appearances as an extra. In an attempt to secure a huge role and obtain his ‘big break,’ he began pitching his own article ideas to publications in order to generate his own possibilities. His plan to test self-defense equipment on himself got the attention of Jeff Tremaine’s skating magazine Big Brother, and he was offered the opportunity to shoot stunts for them for their Number Two video. Knoxville, Tremaine, Sean Cliver, and Dave Carnie collaborated on the production of a pilot using footage from Big Brother and Bam Margera’s CKY videos. Spike Jonze, a friend of Tremaine’s, assisted them in pitching the series to numerous networks. MTV enjoyed the pilot and struck a deal with the entrepreneur, and so the show Jackass was formed. The show has generated significant controversy owing to its material, which many believe is indecent, improper, and promotes risky behaviour.
Although Jackass aired on MTV for only three seasons from October 2000 to February 2002, it spawned a massively successful franchise that includes four feature films released by Paramount Pictures: Jackass: The Movie (2002), Jackass Number Two (2006), Jackass 3D (2010), and Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa (2013). Additionally, it spawned several spin-off series starring members of the Jackass ensemble, including Wildboyz (2003–2006), Viva La Bam (2003–2005), Homewrecker (2005), Bam’s Unholy Union (2007), and Dr. Steve-O.
