Here you will read about JID’s tiny desk concert details. All of JID’s work is meticulously planned out. He appears more invested than the typical emcee, and his drive for perfection was palpable throughout the entire production. Midway through the set, he turned to his band and said, “We’re pretty hot guys. We’re pretty f***ing hot.”
This performance was recorded weeks before the release of his new critically acclaimed third studio album, The Forever Story, and features the East Atlanta native performing songs from the album for the first time live, as well as career-defining songs in ways we’ve never heard them before.
The Forever Story is a jigsaw whose parts reveal the history of JID. This is the tale of a young man whose ambitions of playing professional football were dashed and his subsequent search for meaning. Many urban youths will identify with these stories, but JID’s narrative is unique since no one else raps like him. His music appeals to a wide variety of listeners because of the thoughtful consideration he gives to topics such as family, hometown, and history.
Songs like “Never” and “Surround Sound” are stripped down here to showcase JID’s ability to change pitch, morph words, and switch cadences. After jokingly ending the “Usher tension,” he and his massive backing group perform the closing song, “Kody Blu 31,” which is both powerful and spiritual.
