The third in the line for Presidency, the fifth longest serving member in the Senate in history, Democratic Senator Patrick Leahy announces his retirement. Leahy who stood strong for eight terms, shall be retiring in 2022, and not going for a landmark of ninth term.
In an emotional bid to the people of Vermont, he said, “I’m proud to be Vermont’s longest-serving senator, because I know my time in the Senate has made a difference for Vermonters.”
He also reminisced “I’ve brought Vermont’s voice to the United States Senate and Vermont’s values around the world,”. At the occasion he was accompanied by his better half, Marcelle. “And while I will continue to serve Vermont, Marcelle and I have reached a conclusion that it’s time to put down the gavel, that it’s time to pass the torch to the next Vermonter … It’s time to come home.”
Even till the dawn of his journey, he is currently serving as the chairman of the all-important Senate Appropriations Committee. He is also carefully sifting through the details of economic relief through Congress. He is the senior-most member of both the Judiciary and the Agriculture committees.
Leahy has also been an important voice at the Appropriations Subcommittee on State Department, Foreign Operations and Related Programs. He has been proactive in guarding the United States’ role across shores as well.
He has had admirers across party lines as well, one of his colleagues with whom he worked on Criminal Justice Reforms, Chuck Grassley of Iowa, said in a tweet, “Sorry 2hear of Sen Leahy’s retirement He & I work together on so many major pieces of legislation False Claims Whistleblower protections EB5 Freedom of Information Act to name a few Pat, Marcelle, Barbara & I are gr8 friends For the Senate his leadership will b missed.”
As a connoisseur of art, and all that is beautiful, he would often be seen with his camera around the Capitol City capturing the essence of its history, and sharing anecdotes with journalists. He also sees himself as a music buff, and a fan of the batman series. He has also done some movie cameos alongside famous actors like Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carey.
