On Wednesday, Hunter Biden’s lawyers asked state and federal agencies to look into a computer shop owner, Rudy Giuliani, and a number of right-wing political figures who helped spread the contents of his laptop. They say that these people broke computer laws and other laws while trying to “weaponize” the laptop contents against his father.
The accusations were made in letters to the Delaware attorney general, the Justice Department’s National Security Division, and the IRS. This is the first time that President Joe Biden’s son and his legal team have said in public that it was his personal information that was found on a laptop left at a Delaware repair shop. But his legal team said that their new outreach does not mean that the laptop story that has been going around on the right is true.
Hunter Biden hired new lawyers to help him defend himself against attacks from Republicans, who have tried to use his personal problems with drugs and congressional investigations of his business dealings to attack the president. The letters show that Hunter Biden has changed his strategy in a clear way. Hunter Biden is also the subject of a federal criminal investigation that is still going on. The investigation is about taxes and other things.
In addition to the letters to the government agencies, Biden’s lawyers sent a “cease and desist” letter to Fox News and its host Tucker Carlson on Wednesday. The letter asked for the story that Carlson told on his show to be taken down because it is false, according to Biden’s team.
In the letter to Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings, Hunter Biden’s lawyers say that John Paul Mac Isaac, the owner of a computer repair shop, accessed the laptop without permission and gave its contents to the New York Post for a story that was published in the weeks before the 2020 election. Mac Isaac has said in a book and in interviews that Hunter Biden gave him the laptop in 2019 at his store.
“This failed dirty political trick directly resulted in the exposure, exploitation, and manipulation of Mr. Biden’s private and personal information. Mr. Mac Isaac’s intentional, reckless, and unlawful conduct allowed for hundreds of gigabytes of Mr. Biden’s personal data, without any discretion, to be circulated around the Internet,” Hunter Biden’s attorney Abbe Lowell wrote in the letter.
In the letter, Garrett Ziegler, John Paul Mac Isaac, Robert Costello, Rudy Giuliani, and Stephen Bannon are all asked to be looked into.
Brian R. Della Rocca, Mac Isaac’s lawyer, confirmed that he got the letter and said that after skimming it, all he saw was“a privileged person hiring yet another high-priced attorney to redirect attention away from his own unlawful actions.” Costello called it a “legally frivolous document” and accused Biden’s new legal team of trying to intimidate people.

A Giuliani communications adviser, Ted Goodman, called the letters an “obvious attempt to silence.” CNN has reached out to each of the other individuals or their lawyers for comment. The Justice Department didn’t want to say anything, and CNN also tried to talk to the IRS and the attorney general’s office in Delaware.
Since the existence of the laptop was first made public, Hunter Biden has tried to cast doubt on the information about him that was said to come from the laptop. It looks like it has a huge amount of information, including business documents, emails, photos, and maybe even some potentially racy stuff.
“There could be a laptop out there that was stolen from me,” Hunter Biden said in a 2021 CBS interview while promoting his memoir. “It could be that I was hacked. It could be that it was the – that it was Russian intelligence. It could be that it was stolen from me.”
On Wednesday, Lowell, the Biden attorney, said that the new letters from Biden’s team “do not confirm Mac Isaac’s or others’ versions of a so-called laptop.” “They address their conduct of seeking, manipulating and disseminating what they allege to be Mr. Biden’s personal data, wherever they claim to have gotten it,” Lowell said in a statement to CNN.
Mac Isaac said that he got the laptop when Hunter Biden brought it to his shop to be fixed in April 2019. According to the repair shop owner’s book, Biden signed a contract with Mac Isaac that said if the laptop was not picked up within 90 days, it would become Mac Isaac’s property. Mac Isaac says that Biden never returned to get the laptop.
But Mac Isaac said that he looked through Hunter Biden’s laptop files the day after it was given to him. In his book, Mac Isaac wrote that the day after Hunter Biden gave him the laptop, he found a file on the hard drive called “income.pdf” that seemed to keep track of Biden’s finances.
Giuliani’s lawyer, Robert Costello, says that a copy of the hard drive was sent to one of Giuliani’s business addresses at the end of August or the beginning of September 2020. Giuliani sent the New York Post a copy of the hard drive in the end. In October 2020, Giuliani told The Wall Street Journal that he “had every right” to use the hard drive.
Garrett Ziegler, who used to work for Trump White House adviser Peter Navarro, runs a research group that put emails and documents from Hunter’s laptop on a website that anyone can see. Politico says that Ziegler said he got a copy of the laptop from Giuliani and Bernard Kerik, who was the former police commissioner of New York City and a friend of Giuliani.
A disclaimer says, “Marco Polo testifies that the contents of the Biden laptop were abandoned property” on the website where Ziegler’s group, Marco Polo, posted what they said were the contents of the laptop. Hunter Biden told CBS in April 2021 that he didn’t know if the laptop belonged to him or not, but that it was possible. Hunter Biden said that he had never taken his laptop to Delaware to have it fixed. “Not that I remember at all,” he added.
