Gretchen Whitmer, the incumbent governor of Michigan, stated on Sunday that she “would like to think” her reelection signalled a rejection of political violence.

“Good people need to call this out and say we will not tolerate this in this country. And perhaps part of that message was sent this election, Whitmer said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.

Whitmer was the intended victim of an abduction scheme in the year 2020, and the risk of political violence became especially widespread around the end of the previous month after the savage attack on the husband of the Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi.

The governor, who handily defeated her Republican opponent Tudor Dixon in the election by a margin of more than ten points, stated that abortion was an issue in both her race and other elections held across the country.

On Tuesday, voters in Michigan adopted one of five similar items that were on the ballots in their state last week: an amendment to the state constitution that would protect the right to have an abortion.

“Democrats were battling to find solutions to problems, but they were also fighting to safeguard our ability to make our own decisions about our bodies. Whitmer described these concerns as “fundamental and essential difficulties.”

Although she admitted that “a governor can’t address inflation,” she nevertheless positioned abortion as a major economic concern, just as she did when she was running for office.

Whitmer told the show’s host, Dana Bash, that the ability to decide when and whether or not to have children is the most important economic decision a woman will make in her life.

In the election that took place a week ago, Democrats exceeded the expectations that were set by historical trends and the support ratings of President Joe Biden to maintain a majority in the Senate as well as crucial governorships.

As the votes were still being tabulated on Sunday morning, the party continued to hold out hope that it would maintain its majority in the House.
