Grand Blue, or Grand Blue Dreaming as it’s called in English, is a Japanese manga serial written by Kenji Inoue and portrayed by Kimitake Yoshioka. As of March 2022, it has been compiled into eighteen tankbon volumes after running in Kodansha’s seinen manga magazine excellent! Afternoon since April 2014. You will read about Grand Blue’s plot, cast, and other details here.
Kodansha USA, which publishes manga in Japan, also releases digital English editions of the series under the Kodansha Comics label. Zero-G adapted this into an anime series that ran on MBS’s Animism block from July to September of 2018. In August of 2020, a live-action film rendition hit theatres.
Grand Blue Plot
Iori Kitahara is excited to begin his collegiate career on the Izu Peninsula, where he will live in a room above his uncle’s diving store, Grand Blue. But when he joins the local Diving Club, he is taken aback to discover that they are a group of muscular men who spend more time drinking, partying, and stripping naked than they do diving. Iori tries to keep his distance from the group, but he soon finds himself caught up in their antics as his cousins try to teach him the joys of scuba diving.
Grand Blue Cast
Iori Kitahara
Iori, a first-year Mechanical Engineering major at Izu University, joined the diving club without ever having learned how to swim. Despite his best efforts, Iori soon found himself embroiled in the “Peek a Boo” Diving Club’s activities, which frequently culminated in drunken, scantily clad celebrations.
Even though he displays aloofness and boisterousness frequently, he values his connections so highly that he will suppress these characteristics when called upon. His father was adopted by the Kotegawas, but he still considers Chisa and Nanaka his blood relatives.
Chisa Kotegawa
Chisa is Iori’s cousin and a classmate of hers at Izu University. She is a bright and lovely young woman who loves to dive. Chisa is depicted as the most “normal” Peek-a-Boo club member. She keeps her cool and isn’t one for wild parties or excessive drinking. She has no desire for a love interest. Because of her attractiveness, she was constantly harassed by men at her institution.
Nanaka Kotegawa
A curvy woman works as a Grand Blue diving teacher and primarily watches the diving club’s shenanigans. The members of PAB have stated that they are more restrained in their stripping and drinking behavior when she is at drinking events.
Despite being Chisa’s sister, she admits she has a secret crush on her and would therefore support Iori if he guaranteed Chisa’s happiness. Despite Iori’s and Azusa’s best efforts to keep her out of inappropriate situations, Nanaka keeps finding herself in them anyhow. She has terrifying strength that she unleashes anytime she perceives a danger to her friendship with Chisa.
Kōhei Imamura
He is Iori’s best buddy and friendly rival. Kohei is a dedicated otaku who loves to show his fandom by dressing as his favorite anime girl character. He came to college to pursue the impossible goal of maintaining a harem of attractive high school students, but instead, he found himself involved in the Peek a Boo club. Kohei’s comic antics often stem from his disconnection from reality and immersion in the world of anime.
