Next week, Republicans who know the situation, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is scheduled to officially announce his candidacy to unseat former President Donald Trump as the party’s nominee for president in 2024.
Republican, DeSantis will submit paperwork to the Federal Election Commission next week declaring his candidacy. A formal announcement is anticipated the following week in Dunedin, Florida, where he was born and raised.
Republican strategist connected to the governor’s political staff, DeSantis is likely to soft-launch the campaign as early as Wednesday to coincide with the paperwork filing.
The planning, though, is still fluid, related to a different source, and DeSantis has a history of shocking even his closest aides and allies with last-minute adjustments.
DeSantis, who frequently claims that his organization is leak-free, would be further driven to deviate from the plan to annoy the media outlets who have already reported on his announcement, the insider suggested.
“With him, it’s always a possibility,” the person stated. Yet several of his top donors and fundraisers have been called to South Florida in anticipation of being asked to raise money for a DeSantis presidential campaign, setting the machinery for a launch in motion.
By submitting his documentation formally, his supporters can start making donation requests on his behalf. Sources who know the situation, the Four Seasons in Miami has scheduled about 100 hotel rooms for events like donor receptions, briefings with DeSantis’ political staff, and sessions where participants will dial for cash.
Each benefit is expected to raise between $100,000 and $150,000. Requests for comment from a DeSantis political operation spokeswoman went unanswered.
The governor’s political organization had set its sights on a debut following Florida’s legislative session six months ago. Still, an announcement around Memorial Day weekend is on the earlier side of that timeframe.
DeSantis may be responding to funders and supporters who want to see him enter the race and more directly oppose Trump, as suggested by this.
Polls, the former president is still comfortably ahead of DeSantis despite the latter’s dragged-out campaign launch, which included a book release and tour, 12 appearances at local GOP fundraisers, a trip abroad, the formation of a super PAC, a donor retreat close to Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, and a media blitz through conservative media.
DeSantis had made mistakes along the way, receiving negative feedback for his contradictory views on the Russia-Ukraine conflict, extending his dispute with Disney into a second year, and being caught off guard when Trump announced endorsements from Florida Republicans in Congress just before the governor traveled to Washington to rally support.
DeSantis’ supporters, on the other hand, are confident that if he declares himself a contender, he will forcefully express his vision for the nation and answer to Trump’s attacks, changing the course of the election dramatically.
The New York Times reports that DeSantis told funders and supporters in a call on Thursday that only he and Vice President Joe Biden could win the general election out of the three presidential candidates: Trump, Biden, and himself.

DeSantis stated during the call that the data from swing states was “not great for the former president and probably insurmountable because people aren’t going to change their view of him,” which was orchestrated by Never Back Down, a super PAC closely connected to the governor.
DeSantis has spent the past few weeks wrapping up loose ends, quickly signing scores of laws across his desk, meeting with fundraisers in South Florida and Tallahassee, and securing endorsements to help his campaign get off the ground.
He spent Saturday in Iowa, where he seemed to outdo Trump by paying an unexpected visit to a BBQ restaurant in Des Moines, close to the location of the former president’s rally that was postponed because of the weather. DeSantis built the foundation for his case against Trump while he was in the state.
“If we make 2024 a referendum on Joe Biden and his failures and we provide a positive alternative for the future of this country, Republicans will win across the board,” DeSantis told Iowa caucus voters in Sioux Center.

“If we do not do that, if we get distracted, if we focus on the election in the past or on other side issues, then I think the Democrats are going to beat us again, and I think it will be very difficult to recover from that defeat.”
According to three sources familiar with the preparations, DeSantis will visit New Hampshire on Friday to hold a policy round table with state senators, several of whom have endorsed him this week.
In recent weeks, Never Back Down has released scores of significant endorsements for the governor in Iowa and New Hampshire. In a show of strength from the grassroots Republicans who assisted in advancing DeSantis’ program through the state legislature this spring, the super PAC also announced on Wednesday the endorsements of 99 Florida politicians.
“Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida legislature have worked together to achieve historic results and produce conservative victories for the people of Florida – turning the state into a beacon of freedom and the fastest growing state in the nation,” Never Back Down spokeswoman Erin Perrine said.
Trump’s team criticized the Florida endorsements as politically driven, pointing out that DeSantis has not yet approved the state budget, which he can veto to block state politicians’ pet initiatives.
Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung said, “There are some brave legislators who have stood up to DeSantis’ Swamp-like behavior and resisted his intimidation tactics in order to do what is right for Florida and the country.”
“Those who he can’t control – including almost the entirety of the Florida federal congressional delegation – have endorsed President Trump because he’s the only candidate who can beat Joe Biden and take back the White House.”
