Fans of the dark British comedy “Flack” won’t be disappointed now that the second season of the show has debuted on Amazon Prime, with only six 45-minute episodes each season.
After all, binge-watching the most recent episode only takes a few days, leaving you wondering when the next one will be released. When it premiered in 2019, the show featured an American publicist in London named Robyn (Anna Paquin) who tried to navigate the turbulence of her personal life while fixing other people’s careers. There is a recent resurgence in its popularity among television viewers.
While Variety and The Hollywood Reporter didn’t give it much love after seeing the first season, GQ labeled it “one of the worst series ever filmed.” As fewer scripted shows were aired on Viacom CBS’s Pop TV, the original network even discontinued it after Season 1.
Even yet, on Rotten Tomatoes, the series currently has an 86 percent Tomatometer Score, with an 85 percent Audience Score, owing to Season 2, which has a 100 percent Tomatometer rating, with people gushing about it on Twitter. The second season of the show was described as “remarkably entertaining” by FanSided. I think a third season is necessary to maintain the new season’s pace and better-developed character arcs. Here’s everything we know thus far about the future of “Flack.”
Flack Season 3 Release Date
A third season of the show was included in the contract Amazon Prime struck in 2020 to take up Season 2 (via Deadline). That revival has yet to materialize. After the release of the most recent season, it would be rare for Amazon to renew “Flack” so early, but the company is known for being nicer to fans of shows like “The Boys,” which was renewed for a third year before the second season even began streaming (via Variety).
Rumors are circulating that “Flack” has been axed from the schedule.
Perhaps more likely, the network will be keeping an eye on its stats to see whether or not six more episodes are worth the effort. Even if Amazon were to renew the series today, it would likely take the remainder of the year, if not longer, to put it on the air. As a result, Robyn and the company’s fate won’t be revealed to the public until at least the middle of 2022.
Flack Season 3 Cast
There’s a lot we don’t know about a possible Season 3 without a formal renewal, including who the cast may include. It’s only logical to expect the big names to show there. As Robyn, Sophie Okonedo, and Genevieve Angelson play Caroline, Lydia Wilson and Rufus Jones play Mark and Melody and Andrew Leung and Arinzé Kene play Sam, all of whom are played by Paquin.
It’s unknown if Martha Plimpton, who played Robyn’s mother in a flashback, will return as the woman whose suicide prompted Robyn to travel to London in the first place. Daniel Dae Kim and Sam Neill joined the cast in Season 2 as Gabriel Cole and Duncan Paulson, respectively, tech geek.
In addition to Debbie Pisani, the show is produced by Oliver Lansley, who has been re-tweeting comments regarding the desire for Season 3 (perhaps hoping for an immediate renewal?).
Flack Season 3 Plot
“Flack” has a clear and persistent message about the machinations of celebrities, but it’s really all about the unraveling of a shattered woman, Robyn, in the end. After Season 2, the show’s anti-hero was once again at the bottom of the heap, this time without friends or a job. Anna Paquin, the actress who plays her, says that this season has taken her to some really dark places emotionally, which is why she enjoys playing the role so much.
“She’s made this career out of having this perfect image and crafting perfect images for other people, but she herself is in a state of inner turmoil, constantly,” Paquin told the Toronto Star. “And I find that to be just an endlessly interesting character to get to explore because there’s sort of no limits on that … She isn’t all good or all bad — most people are not, you know — and so that kind of balance is incredibly fun to get to play with.”
There is a sense that Robyn’s life has been more out-of-balance in the last several months. At the beginning of Season 2, this woman looked to be dealing with addictions and other issues that were threatening her life, but it didn’t work. In Season 3, will Robyn be able to put her life back together? Because they’re curious, fans are anxiously awaiting word on whether or not their shows will be renewed.
