CNN cited a source close with the inquiry as saying that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had performed two searches at the University of Delaware in connection with the investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents.
According to the source, the searches, which had not been made public before, were carried out within the past few weeks with the authorization and participation of the president’s legal staff.
According to the website for the library at the University of Delaware, where Vice President Joe Biden received his education, there is a substantial collection of papers from the president’s time spent serving in the Senate housed there.
The materials were acquired by the investigators from two different university locations on two separate days. According to the source, the documents do not appear to have any marks that indicate they are classified; however, the FBI is currently looking into them.
During the searches, they went through two distinct batches of documents, one being an archive of materials dating back to Biden’s time in the United States Senate, and the other being documents that Biden had provided to the institution in more recent years.
A spokeswoman for the president’s personal attorney, Molly Levinson, declined to comment and sent reporters who approached her with questions to the Department of Justice. In response to questions, a representative for the White House likewise directed reporters to the Department of Justice.
The Justice Department did not wish to comment on the matter. In response to a request for comment, the University of Delaware did not provide a response. According to the website, the more than 1,850 boxes of records that were donated to the university in 2012 have not been made available to the general public since they were brought in.
The most recent action taken by investigators to uncover any newly unknown classified materials was to search the University of Delaware. The two residences of Vice President Joe Biden in Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, as well as the Washington headquarters of the Penn Biden Center, have recently been searched by agents from the FBI.
