Tuesday, a U.S. appeals court upheld the drug trafficking conviction of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman. The court didn’t agree with Guzman’s claim that jurors shouldn’t have been allowed to read about the case in the news while he was on trial.
The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals also didn’t agree with Guzman’s other reasons for wanting a new trial, like that the jury did something wrong or that the conditions in jail were awful.
In an email, the defendant’s lawyer, Marc French, said, “I’m sure Mr. Guzman will seek Supreme Court review,”
As the leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa gang, Guzman was found guilty in February 2019 of trafficking drugs worth billions of dollars and plotting to kill people who were against him. Guzman was told to pay $12.7 billion while he was serving a life term in Colorado’s Supermax prison, which is likely the most secure federal prison.

Chapo Guzman Got Out Of Jail Twice
Guzman’s defense was based on a Vice News story in which an unnamed juror said that at least five other jurors took measures to keep the media away from the trial. And that they lied to the judge in charge, U.S. District Judge Brian Cogan, about it.
The article said that ‘El Chapo’ had drugged and raped young girls. Guzman’s lawyers have said that this is not true. Lawyer Fernich said, “You (have) five jurors who don’t know the meaning of an oath,”
Guzman got out of the most secure jails in Mexico twice. First, he hid in a laundry cart. Then, he crawled through a tunnel that had been dug into his cell. In 2016, he was caught in a bloody fight.
Emma Coronel Aispuro, 32, who used to be a beauty queen, pleaded guilty in June to helping him run his drug business. At her sentencing on November 30, she could get up to ten years in jail.
