Prosecutors And Defence Lawyers Give Their Final Arguments In The Illegal Lobbying Trial Of Trump Ally Tom Barrack

Barrack is said to have broken the law by lobbying for the UAE to help the Donald Trump campaign.

As closing statements in Tom Barrack’s trial on accusations of illegal foreign lobbying came to a close on Tuesday, the prosecution accused Barrack, a close ally of President Trump, of “leveraged his access.” At the same time, the defense suggested that the prosecution was engaging in “misdirection.”

Barrack, a billionaire California real estate investor who managed former President Donald Trump’s 2016 inauguration committee, has been accused by the government of engaging in improper lobbying of the Trump campaign and administration on behalf of the United Arab Emirates. During the nearly two-month-long trial, references were made to both President Trump and some of his closest friends.

Barrack is accused of working as a foreign agent for the UAE between 2016 and 2018 without first registering with the Department of Justice. The prosecutors asked the jury to find him guilty of the accusations against him. During an interview with the FBI in 2019, he allegedly lied on multiple occasions and is also being charged with obstruction of justice.

The prosecution, Ryan Harris, told the jurors that there are two people named Tom Barracks. “The man who talks about weaving a web of tolerance, and the man he is when the cameras are off when no one is watching, and when the facade is stripped away — a man who, ultimately, is doing nothing more than leveraging his access and influence within the Trump administration to make money and acquire power.”

Prosecutors claim that in exchange for Barrack functioning under the “direction and control” of the UAE, officials from the UAE “unlocked its purse strings” and invested over $375 million in Barrack’s business using monies from sovereign wealth funds.

Harris stated that the UAE was “sold” by Mr Barrack based on his political ties.

Barrack entered a plea of not guilty to the accusations brought against him. On Tuesday, his attorney stated in his summary that there was a “complete lack of evidence in this case” and that the case should be dismissed.

Barrack’s attorney, Randall Jackson, addressed the jury and stated that for the case, “instead of proof of direction and control, I submit to you that what they have given you throughout this entire case are misdirection and control.”

Barrack testified in his defense to deny the charges brought against him during the trial. He spent nearly three days on the stand answering questions about his contacts with UAE officials, which he claimed were a part of his long-standing business ties to the Middle East. Barrack also spent nearly three days on the stand answering questions about his contacts with UAE officials.

Barrack, who at times denounced Trump while he was on the stand, denied the prosecutor’s allegations, including the allegation that he agreed to act on behalf of the UAE during a meeting with the head of the UAE’s security council in the spring of 2016. Barrack’s denial was made while he was testifying.

During his evidence, his defense attorney, Michael Schachter, questioned whether the defendant had asked him if he desired to work for the UAE as a foreign agent.

“No,” was the response from Barrack.

Barrack, whose family is originally from Lebanon, stated in his testimony that his interactions with officials from the UAE were well-known. He also said that he did not believe there would have been any restrictions on his ability to discuss the Trump campaign’s positions with officials from the UAE.

Barrack shared his thoughts, saying, “I thought that was a terrific idea.” “The concept of having somebody that knew both confused realms that could establish some web of understanding and tolerance is what I know for a fact that we all needed,” the speaker says.

When confronted by his attorney about the allegations made by the government that he was seeking to “manipulate the people” and “spread UAE propaganda,” he laughed out loud.

Barrack responded, “Not in the least,”

Barrack also testified that he updated then-candidate Trump about his encounters with officials from the United Arab Emirates to assist Trump in better comprehending the difficulties prevalent in the Middle East.

“When I brought it up to President Trump, he congratulated me and told me, ‘You do the right thing.'” Barrack testified to one of his encounters with an official from the UAE.
