Da Brat is ready to show off Da Bump… The hit “Funkdafied” rapper and his wife Jesseca “Judy” Harris-Dupart are expecting a child, the couple tells PEOPLE.
Da Brat, who admits that at 48 says –
“It’s been quite a journey.”
“there’s a lot of stuff we learned about women over the age of 40.”
The couple’s journey to becoming parents began around the time they said “I do” on February 2, 2017. Harris-Dupart, who is 41 years old and the CEO of Kaleidoscope Hair Products, was in the middle of releasing a new line of hair products that were inspired by Da Brat and her famous braids and protective hairstyles.
She says of the tongue-in-cheek marketing tagline for their collaboration –
“It started as a joke, we were like, ‘We’re extending our family!'”
“But then we got a huge response. It was like, ‘Oh my God do we want to actually have kids, and if we do, girl, we better hurry up!'”
Harris-Dupart already had three children before they got together. Kids were never really part of the plan for Da Brat. She says –
“I never thought I was going to have kids.”
“I just thought it wasn’t in the cards for me. I’ve had a great career, a full life. I felt like, because I didn’t get pregnant earlier on, then it just wasn’t going to happen for me.”
That is until she met Harris-Dupart and fell in love with him. Da Brat says –
“I started looking at life so differently.”
“I was like, I want a little me with you. Something special from the both of us that we can share and raise and love unconditionally.”
Still, she didn’t like the idea of being pregnant.
“I was like, nothing’s gonna come out of me!”
Harris-Dupart was able to show her that this wasn’t true. Her wife says –
“We had a little tug-o-war in the beginning…but I felt like she should have the experience.”
“She is so nurturing.”
It was best for Da Brat to carry since Harris-Dupart had major health problems after her egg retrieval procedure. But the rapper had her own hard health problems.
Before her embryo transfer procedure, she had to have surgery to remove fibroids and polyps. Then there was a very sad miscarriage. Da Brat says –
“I had never been so excited about something that I didn’t even know I wanted.”
“I fell in love with the idea and then it was all snatched away from me.”
“Luckily,” she says, “we still had quite a few of her eggs left.” The couple, who chose an anonymous donor described as “an eager entrepreneur” from their cryobank, is now 18 weeks pregnant.
Firmly into her second trimester, Da Brat says, “It’s just a blessing. I’m excited!” She’s also exhausted. She adds –
“I don’t have any cravings or nausea.”
“but I’m always sleepy. It’s crazy!”
Another aspect of pregnancy that’s taken Da Brat by surprise –
“Everything makes me cry. If someone wins American Idol, I cry. I’m like, I’m tougher than that!”
“I think people are going to be shocked,” she says with a laugh, thinking about how tough she is in hip-hop and how happy she is about her happy news and her bump.
So, she decided to embrace the contrast by having a gangster-themed photo shoot during her pregnancy. “I loved it,” she says.

Since the 1990s, Da Brat has shown off her unique style and talent, but she has kept her personal life quiet for a long time.
The rapper, who came out about being gay for the first time in 2020, can’t help but smile at how her life has turned out.
She says of living openly as a member of the LGBTQ community –
“It’s way different now than it was before.”
“When I came out I was like ‘Damn, if I knew it was going to be this nice and loving I’d have probably come out a long time ago!'”
Most importantly, she says of Harris-Dupart –
“[I came out] because of her inspiring me.”
“and wanting to scream it from the mountaintops that I found somebody that I am totally in love with and I don’t want to hide it anymore.”
That wraps up our coverage of Da Brat’s Pregnancy Announcement. The artist, who came out as gay in 2020, is happy with her life.
