The Respect for Marriage Act was signed into law by Vice President Joe Biden of the United States on Tuesday at a joyous ceremony that featured a performance by American singer Cyndi Lauper of her song “True Colors” in front of hundreds of supporters on the lawn of the White House.

It was out of worry that the Supreme Court may withdraw its legal support for same-s*x partnerships that the United States government drafted the new statute that recognizes same-s*x marriages as valid under federal law.

As Vice President Biden signed the law, the audience erupted in cheers. “The institution of marriage is not complicated. Who do you love? And how committed are you going to be to the one you love? There is no more complexity beyond that. The law acknowledges that individuals ought to have the freedom to decide how they wish to respond to those inquiries for themselves “Biden added. “Today’s a good day.”

Both the American pop superstar Cyndi Lauper and the British vocalist Sam Smith gave performances at the occasion. Before beginning her performance, Lauper remarked, “Well, this time, love wins.” Lauper, 69, who rose to fame with her song “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” in 1983, stated that the act provided families like hers and Americans around the country with a sense of calm and security.

At a press conference held before the performance, LGBT rights activist Cyndi Lauper, who has been married to actor David Thornton since 1991, told reporters, “We can rest easy tonight because our families are validated and because now we’re allowed to love who we love, which sounds odd to say, but Americans can now love who we love.” Lauper has been married to Thornton since 1991.

The Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, gave a speech to the crowd before the measure was signed and said it would promote equality. She emphasized that everyone should have the opportunity to experience “the amazing blessing of forming a marriage with the person you love.” Chuck Schumer, the Majority Leader of the Senate, referred to it as “a day of jubilation” after learning that his daughter and her hubby are expecting a child.
