Crystal Hayslett Career

After two years in the costume department at Tyler Perry Studios, Crystal Hayslett was promoted to costume designer and Tyler Perry’s personal stylist. In addition to appearing as a guest star on Perry’s current BET smash program, Tyler Perry’s Sistas, the Tennessee native became a consulting producer with Perry’s strong backing. Hayslett made her acting debut in the 2011 short film This Time directed by Matthew Cherry, and she has also been on BET’s The Game and Stomp the Yard 2.

Today, Hayslett is a series regular on the program, playing the role of Fatima, a paralegal at a famous law firm whose romantic, social, and professional relationships with the other main characters are complicated. The up-and-coming Atlanta actor and personal stylist was recently interviewed by HelloBeautiful to discuss her position on Tyler Perry’s Sistas, her experience in the fashion and costume design industry, and how her two professions have complemented each other.

In 2013, she began working as a Production Assistant at Tyler Perry Studios, where her duties included “getting coffee, doing errands, rushing clothing to set, and everything in between.” She started off as a personal assistant, then moved up to the background, and finally made it to the first team after two years (anyone who has speaking lines and takes direction directly from the director).

She got a call in the summer of 2015, when filming was on break, giving me the role of costume designer; this led to an offer of working as Tyler Perry’s personal stylist. All of her plans were upended when she agreed to take on those two jobs.

Crystal Hayslett Education

Ever since she was a little girl, Crystal has had a passion for clothes. Since Martin, Tennessee lacked a shopping centre, she and her family had to go to other towns to do their retail therapy. She read EBONY, VIBE, Jet, and Word Up! magazines and watched series like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and 106 & Park to keep up with the times. After finishing college, she tried her hand at a job on Capitol Hill, but quickly realised that it wasn’t a good fit. She attended UT, where she was able to land a position at a small boutique.

She realised that politics was not where her interests lay and that she had more to offer the world via her creativity in other mediums, so she relocated from Washington, DC to Atlanta in 2009 to do so. She was first met with moderate success in the musical arena. But she started having problems, such as finding a suitable production team, closing a sale, etc. She was doing concerts and performances all over the city, and her stylist buddy kept gushing about how great she looked. She urged her to look for a job as a stylist. In 2012, she was hired as a production assistant at Tyler Perry Studios (TPS).
