MOUNT GILEAD — The Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Mount Gilead Post is currently investigating a fatal car accident that took place on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at approximately 6:40 PM on Interstate 71 near milepost 146 in Harmony Township, Morrow County. The incident was reported to have occurred in Morrow County.
Abraham Smith Jr., age 55, was the driver of a gray 2006 Cadillac CTS when the incident occurred. Samual McConn, 63 years old and a resident of Sauquoit, New York, was the driver of a semi-tractor and trailer combination. A gray 2021 Toyota 4-Runner was being driven by Tiffany Strayer, who was 32 years old and from Keller, Texas.

On Interstate 71, the Cadillac was traveling in the southbound lanes. On Interstate 71 heading north, the tractor-trailer combination was traveling in the middle lane. The Toyota was traveling north on Interstate 71 in the right lane at the time of the accident. The collision between the Cadillac and the semi was caused by the Cadillac crossing the median. After the collision, both vehicles continued off the east side of the route where they had been traveling. The Cadillac and the semi-tractor and trailer both caught fire at the same time.
The deceased status of Mr. Smith was confirmed by the attending medical staff at the site. Mr. McConn was taken by ambulance to the Ohio Health Mansfield Hospital for treatment of his relatively mild injuries. The accident did not leave Ms. Strayer with any injuries. At the time of the collision, each occupant was properly restrained by their seatbelt. At this point in time, alcohol and other substances of abuse are unknown influences.
The Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, the Morrow County Emergency Medical Services, the Big Walnut Fire Department, the Ohio Department of Transportation, Morrow County EMA, 24/7 Towing, and A-Towing Ray’s provided assistance to the Ohio State Highway Patrol while they were on the scene. The Mount Gilead Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol is continuing their investigation into the car accident that occurred earlier.
