Canadian ice hockey player Connor McDavid is a member of the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL) (NHL). After being drafted first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, he has won the Art Ross Trophy three times as the league’s leading scorer.
The 18-year-old Ontario native Connor McDavid made his IIHF debut with the Canadian under-18 team in the 2013 IIHF World U18 Championships in Sochi, Russia, becoming the youngest member of the Canadian squad.
A first-round pick of the Oilers in 2015’s entry draught, Connor McDavid has gone on to win the Art Ross Trophy three times for league scoring leader, the Hart Memorial Trophy in 2017 and 2021 for his team’s most valuable player, and the Ted Lindsay Award three times as the league’s finest player. Since he was born and raised in Toronto, where he also played hockey, McDavid was granted Hockey Canada’s “Exceptional Player” designation, allowing him to skip a year of major junior. For three seasons, he was drafted first overall by the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. For Canada’s junior and senior teams, McDavid competed in three world championships and one world championship in his international career. He won one gold medal at each level of competition.

The York-Simcoe Express, an Aurora, Ontario-based team that McDavid eventually joined and played for under his father Brian’s tutelage, went on to win four straight Ontario Minor Hockey Association championships.
According to McDavid, leaving the York Simcoe Express in 2011 to join the Toronto Marlboros cost him and his parents friendships because of the decision they made. After considering Boston University and the Terriers hockey team, McDavid elected to play in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL).

McDavid, a native of Southern Ontario, was a passionate supporter of a number of local sports teams. Toronto Maple Leafs were his all-time favourite team growing up, but the Toronto Raptors and the Toronto Blue Jays were also close to his heart. Sidney Crosby’s presence on the Pittsburgh Penguins made McDavid a Pittsburgh Penguins fan in addition to the Toronto Maple Leafs. In 2015, McDavid compared then-Maple Leafs centre Tyler Bozak, who had similar skating and a “pass first” approach to himself, as his most comparable NHL player.
