The Christmas Parade Was Canceled After Demonstrators For Emmett Till Were Threatened

According to law enforcement officials, a Christmas parade that was scheduled to take place on Saturday in Bowling Green, Kentucky, was canceled after potential threats were made against protesters who were planning to attend.

According to Warren County Sheriff Brett Hightower, civil rights organizations demonstrated for “Justice for Emmett Till” at both the Justice Center and an apartment on Shive Lane. The apartment on Shive Lane was where Carolyn Bryant Donham lived. Bryant Donham was the white lady who, in August of 1955, claimed that 14-year-old Emmett Till had made sexual overtures toward her. This allegation ultimately led to Till’s kidnapping and death.

In a video posted on Facebook on Saturday, the Bowling Green Police Department and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office said that they had learned of threats made against the groups and that they are currently working alongside the FBI and Homeland Security to investigate the reported threats. The video also stated that they had learned of the threats.

It is believed that Bryant Donham’s statement played a role in Emmett Till’s kidnapping and subsequent murder at the hands of Roy Bryant, Till’s husband, and J.W. Milam, Roy Bryant’s half-brother. After Till’s mangled body was discovered in the Tallahatchie River many weeks after his death, two men were tried for his murder but found not guilty by an all-white jury. Bryant Donham was never taken into custody for any reason.
