Five months after Will Smith shocked millions of people around the world by slapping him onstage at the Academy Awards, Chris Rock gave him a sort of slap back at the Oscars.
The comedian joked with the crowd at a stand-up show in Phoenix on Sunday night that he had been asked to host the Oscars next year. This is what the Arizona Republic reported. But he said jokingly that going back to Hollywood’s biggest night would be like going back to a crime scene.
Rock told the crowd at Arizona Financial Theatre that going back to the awards ceremony would be like asking Nicole Brown Simpson “to go back to the restaurant” where she left her glasses before she was killed. He was talking about the murder trial of O.J. Simpson. Rock also said that he turned down an offer to do a Super Bowl ad after the slap.

Monday, the film academy didn’t answer when asked for a comment. The organization usually doesn’t tell potential hosts what they’re talking about, and it’s not likely that they’ll name a host for next year’s show, which is set for March 12, until it’s closer.
In an interview with a group of reporters last week, the new head of the academy, Bill Kramer, said that the group wants to move on from the shocking incident that led to Smith being banned for 10 years from all academy events.
When asked if the incident would be talked about in any way at the 2023 Oscars, Kramer said, “We want to move on and have an Oscars that celebrates movies.” “Right now, we’re focusing on that. It’s all about getting ahead.” Even though three of the last four Oscars ceremonies didn’t have a host, Kramer said that this year’s show will definitely have one.
He stated, “We most certainly desire to have a host.” “A good host is of the utmost importance to us. This year, we are dedicated to having a host on the show, and we are currently researching potential important partners for that.” (Amy Schumer, Regina Hall, and Wanda Sykes served as co-hosts for the ceremony that took place in March.)
After Rock’s altercation with Smith, ticket prices increased for his ongoing stand-up tour, which included a trip to Phoenix, which was the most recent date on the tour. Rock has, for the most part, avoided talking about the controversy surrounding the Oscars while he is on tour; however, on Sunday, he did make a joke about how much the slap hurt and how physically outmatched he was by Smith, who has offered several apologies since the incident that led to the controversy.
Rock said that the other person was larger than he was. “A battle between Will Smith and I would not receive the blessing of the state of Nevada,” I said. The Los Angeles Times was the first publication to publish this news.
