On the popular US television show Murphy Brown, Charles Kimbrough played a stiff-upper-lipped news anchor alongside Candice Bergen. He passed away in Culver City, California, last month. He was 86.

Between 1988 to 1998, Kimbrough played the role of newscaster Jim Dial on the popular CBS sitcom Murphy Brown. He received an Emmy nomination in 1990 for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.

In the 2018 reboot, he played the part again for three episodes. His son and representatives later verified his passing to The Associated Press on January 11 after his death was initially reported by The New York Times.

The company that handled Kimbrough claimed that the actor was “a joy to behold” both on stage and in front of the camera. The agency claimed the actor passed away in a hospital from natural causes.

Kimbrough’s wife, actress Beth Howland, who portrayed Vera, the diner server, in the CBS comedy Alice in the 1970s and 1980s, passed away in 2016. Their 2002 nuptials took place more than ten years after his 1991 divorce from Mary Jane (Wilson) Kimbrough, who passed away in 2007.

Kimbrough is survived by a sister named Linda Kimbrough, a son named John Kimbrough, a stepdaughter named Holly Howland, and a granddaughter named Cody, according to SMS Talent. Kimbrough, born on May 23, 1936, worked in the New York theater for many years.

For his Broadway performance in the Stephen Sondheim musical Company, he received a Tony nomination in 1971. Kimbrough also provided the voice of Victor, a gargoyle, in the Disney animated movie The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
