On Friday, unhealthy air conditions were expected in some areas of the United States for another day as smoke from Canadian wildfires was carried south by winds. However, conditions have started to improve.
An unsettling orange haze had been engulfing New York City since Tuesday when smoke from wildfires in Canada was pushed south.
The city, which has a population of over 8 million, was this week regarded as having the worst air quality in the world, but by early Friday, it was rated 15th on the list by monitoring firm IQAir.com.
National Weather Service air quality alerts affected most of New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Indiana, and portions of Ohio and Michigan.

“An area of upper low pressure has and will continue to direct the smoke from the wildfires in Quebec, Ontario and Nova Scotia down into parts of the Midwest, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic through the weekend,” the weather service in the U.S. said in a Thursday forecast discussion.
Mayor of New York City Eric Adams had advised everyone to restrict their time outside in the smoky weather and to stay inside if they were particularly vulnerable. Weather service, and an air quality warning affect much of the region into Friday.
Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. were among the other cities impacted. Conditions also caused flight delays or cancellations. Out of extreme caution, Philadelphia’s school administration announced that all of the city’s schools would be closed on Friday.
A previously scheduled “clerical day” meant that some children would not be attending classrooms on Friday anyhow, but all New York City public school students who were supposed to be there on Friday were moved to remote.
