The Most Recent Entry in Activision’s Call of Duty Series The game will be available this week, and although there will not be a release for Nintendo, there have been discussions with Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, over the possibility of bringing the popular first-person shooter franchise to the Switch.
In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer mentioned that the company’s plan for the series through the Activision Blizzard deal may be to treat it like Minecraft and put it on “many different screens,” including Switch. Spencer made this comment while pointing out that Switch is one of those screens (via The Verge senior editor, Tom Warren).
“Call of Duty will be available exclusively on PlayStation. I’d love to see it on Switch, I’d love to see the game playable on many different screens. We intend to make CoD behave like Minecraft”
The comments that Phil made are a continuation of an interview that CNBC conducted earlier this year with Microsoft President Brad Smith. In that interview, Smith also mentioned how the American technology giant would like to bring the Call of Duty series to Switch through the acquisition. Phil’s comments follow on from that interview.
“One of the things we’re very clear about as we go forward with the regulatory review The takeaway from this acquisition is that today’s legendary titles like Call of Duty from Activision Blizzard will continue to be available on the Sony PlayStation.
“We want to bring this to Nintendo devices. We want to bring other popular titles that Activision and ensure that they remain available on PlayStation, [and] that they become available on Nintendo.”
During that period, Smith cited Minecraft as an illustration of Microsoft’s ongoing commitment to other Forums.
Naturally, for Microsoft to carry it out, the company must first finish the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. This is a prerequisite for Microsoft. At the moment, the concluding steps of this transaction are being worked out. At this rate, if Call of Duty is going to make a comeback on a Nintendo system, it will almost certainly be on a next-generation system.
The most recent installments of the Call of Duty series to appear on a Nintendo platform were Call of Duty: Black Ops II (2012) and Call of Duty: Ghosts (2013), both of which were published within the Wii U generation.
