During his first court appearance on Tuesday in San Francisco the man accused of assaulting Paul Pelosi who is married to Nancy Pelosi the Speaker of the House of Representatives filed a not-guilty plea to all of the state charges against him.
The 42-year-old defendant David DePape is being charged with numerous state offences, including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, according to statements made by the District Attorney for San Francisco on Monday. These accusations will be brought against DePape in addition to the federal allegations he is already facing, including attempted kidnapping and assault.
During the arraignment on Tuesday, DePape renounced his right to a hearing within ten days. Judge Diane Northway scheduled a hearing for November 4 in San Francisco Superior Court to set a date for the preliminary hearing and determine the amount of bail to be set. During the arraignment, the court forbade anyone from bringing cameras inside.
Outside the courtroom, DePape’s attorney, Adam Lipson, made the following statement: There has been a lot of speculation, a lot of rumour, based on the nature of this case. I’m not going to talk about the facts of this case right now because I don’t want to add to the amount of speculation already out there.
Lipson said that it would be premature to talk about that at this time, adding that there has been a lot of speculation regarding Mr DePape’s vulnerability to misinformation. “Lipson said, ” There has been a lot of speculation regarding Mr DePape’s vulnerability to misinformation.”
Jenkins has stated that it appears the attack was “politically motivated” based on the allegations made by DePape, and he made this statement.
She stated, “yes, it appears as though this was, based on his statements and comments that were made in that house during his encounter with Mr Pelosi, that this was politically motivated.” “Yes, it appears as though this was, based on his statements and comments made in that house during his encounter with Mr Pelosi.”
According to the records filed in the case, DePape informed the police that he intended to hold Nancy Pelosi hostage and described her as the “leader of the pack of lies” pushed by the Democrats.
Paul Pelosi Is “Steadily Improving,” Doctors Say
Speaker Pelosi said in a statement that Paul Pelosi is “making steady progress on what will be a protracted rehabilitation process.” The message was sent on Monday evening.
“Since the heinous attack on Paul early Friday morning, we have been inundated with thousands of letters expressing worry, praying for him, and sending their best wishes. The message concluded with the words, “we are most grateful.”
According to a previous press release from Nancy Pelosi’s office, Paul Pelosi underwent “successful surgery to repair a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hands” after the attack. The injuries that Paul sustained included a skull fracture and severe wounds to his right arm and hands.
It is anticipated that members of the Pelosi family will be allowed to listen to the audio from the 911 call that Paul Pelosi put to the police and view body camera footage of policemen who responded to his residence on the night that he was attacked.
The Criminal Complaint Describes A Scary Attack
The court document that was related to the federal charges that were brought against DePape contained the most thorough description that has been given so far of Paul Pelosi’s call to 911 while the incident was taking place.
Pelosi is reported to have said something to the effect that there is a man in the house and that the man is going to wait for Pelosi’s wife. In addition, Pelosi communicated that he is unaware of the identity of the male. An FBI agent stated under oath in an affidavit that was made public on Monday that the individual claimed his name was David.
Paul Pelosi contacted 911 at 2:23 a.m. PT on Friday, and according to the affidavit that was unsealed on Monday, law enforcement arrived at his residence eight minutes after that.
According to the affidavit, “When the door was opened, Pelosi and DePape were both wielding a hammer with one hand, and DePape had his other hand holding onto Pelosi’s forearm.” Pelosi and DePape were both holding a hammer in one hand.
Paul Pelosi hailed the officers when they arrived. The officers inquired as to what was taking place with them. In his response, DePape stated that everything was in order. The officers then requested that Pelosi and DePape stop their aggressive behaviour.
At that exact moment, according to the allegations, DePape yanked the hammer away from Paul Pelosi and swung it, causing Pelosi to sustain a head injury. After receiving the strike, the affidavit stated that Pelosi “looked comatose on the ground.” [citation needed]
The FBI agent wrote in the affidavit that “DePape was prepared to detain and hurt Speaker Pelosi when he invaded the Pelosi residence in the early morning of October 28, 2022.” The date of the incident was October 28. DePape had zip ties, tape, rope, and at least one hammer on that particular morning.
DePape confronted Pelosi and demanded to know where his wife was, saying, “Where is Nancy?” The person speaking was not at home when the assault occurred.
“DePape indicated that he was going to hold Nancy hostage and talk to her,” as stated in the affidavit. If Nancy were to tell DePape the ‘truth,’ he would set her free; yet, if she were to lie to him, he threatened to shatter her kneecaps.
According to the statement filed by the FBI, “DePape was positive that Nancy would not have spoken the ‘truth.'”
It Doesn’t Belong In This Country
Mayorkas’s first words since the attack last week were, “There’s no place for it in this country.” He also said that it was hard to call the episode “domestic terrorism” because of what that term means legally.
On the same day that Pelosi was attacked, federal officials warned in a joint report that violent domestic extremists pose a more significant threat to the midterm elections in 2022.
When asked if he was worried about copycat attacks, Mayorkas said violent domestic extremism is “one of the greatest terrorism-related” threats to the US. He also noted that DHS tracks the threat environment and sends information to state and local law enforcement agencies, so they are aware of the threat.
US Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger said on Tuesday that the agency is “reviewing” what happened and that the current political climate calls for more resources to ensure members of Congress are safe.
Manger said in a written statement, “We think the political climate of today calls for more resources to add more layers of physical security for Members of Congress.”
“This plan would put a lot of emphasis on making the measures already in place for Congressional leadership even stronger. I hope you can understand that we can’t tell you about these changes because our country can’t afford to make it easier for bad people,” he said.
Manger also said that the Capitol Police has “worked hard to investigate reported threats, improve intelligence collection and analysis, and strengthen our partnerships with law enforcement agencies across the country” to protect Members when they travel outside Washington, DC.
Zoe Lofgren, a Democrat from California, told Brianna Keilar on Tuesday that politicians won’t be safer “until we find out what is at the heart of this political violence.”
“Both Ronna McDaniel, the head of the RNC, and Kevin McCarthy, the minority leader, said they were sad about Paul Pelosi. But then he said, “It’s really because of crime, and that’s because of the Democrats.”
“That’s like saying Lee Harvey Oswald was involved in crime in Dallas or John Wilkes Booth was killed because of crime at Ford’s Theater. “It’s not only silly, but it’s also part of the problem that people are ignoring what’s causing this violence,” Lofgren said.
