President Biden decided to apprise the people of the developments regarding the new variant, ‘Omicron’. The President urged the people to get vaccinated and additional inoculations if the situation requires.
He also told stated that the new variant of the virus should be “a cause for concern, not a cause for panic”. While addressing at the White House he said, “We have the best vaccine in the world, the best medicines, the best scientists, and we’re learning more every single day. And we’ll fight this variant with scientific and knowledgeable actions and speed, not chaos and confusion”.
The new variant was detected first by South African health authorities, and just within a few days, fear is resurfacing of the possible lockdowns and the threat the virus itself poses.
From what we have learned so far, that it may be potentially more dangerous than the Delta variant since it has over 30 mutations. The fear also prevails around its potential vaccine evasion tendencies, as it would open a whole new can of worms.
Within a few days, the variant has now been found in Japan, Australia, Israel, Belgium, Netherlands, and many more. Many of these countries have already put in place travel restrictions, or mandatory quarantine requirements for people traveling from South Africa, and some other African nations.
The Health Authorities believe that people who have been fully vaccinated and have taken a booster shot have a lower chance of catching the virus. Whereas unvaccinated people run a greater risk and enhance the chances of further mutations which may create even more chances of a problem.
Specifying the need for caution, Biden said, “Please wear your mask when you’re indoors, in public settings around other people. It protects you, it protects those around you.”
He further added that currently, the government is not thinking in the direction of additional requirements of lockdowns or imposing travel bans. “If people are vaccinated and wear their masks, there’s no need for lockdown,” he said.
