American celebrity chef, author, and travel documentarian Anthony Michael Bourdain (June 25, 1956 – June 8, 2018) was known for his shows that delved into the intersection of global cuisine, culture, and history. Early Life
On June 25, 1956, Anthony Michael Bourdain entered the world in the Big Apple. Gladys (nee Sacksman) and Pierre Bourdain were his parents (1929-1987). Christopher, his younger sibling, arrived a few years later. Anthony’s upbringing included both of his parents, and he wrote about it in one of his books “Love and attention were never a problem for me. Indeed, I was the beloved child of my parents. Pierre worked as a salesman at a camera store and as a floor manager at a record store in New York City when Bourdain was born. Gladys worked as a staff editor for The New York Times, and he went on to become an executive at Columbia Records.
Culinary Training and Career
During a family trip to France, young Bourdain tried an oyster fresh off a fisherman’s boat, sparking his lifelong interest in fine cuisine. After finishing high school at the all-male Dwight-Englewood School in Englewood, New Jersey, he enrolled and left Vassar College after only two years. While attending Vassar, he worked in Provincetown, Massachusetts, seafood restaurants that ultimately led him to seek a profession in cooking.
Bourdain graduated in 1978 from The Culinary Institute of America. After that, he oversaw the kitchens of several New York City restaurants, including the Supper Club, One-Fifth Avenue, and Sullivan’s.
Personal Life
Bourdain went out with Nancy Putkoski in the 1970s when they were both students at Dwight-Englewood School. She was older than him, “part of a druggy crowd,” and “a nasty lady,” in his words. Bourdain finished a year early to join Putkoski at Vassar College, which had recently begun accepting men, even though she was a year ahead of him.
Between the ages of seventeen and nineteen, he attended school there. A short trip of only 15 minutes took him to the Culinary Institute of America after he graduated from Vassar. After being married for over a decade, the couple finally decided to split up in 2005.
They tied the knot on April 20, 2007, and she became a successful MMA fighter. The couple welcomed their daughter Ariane in 2007. According to Bourdain, spending 250 days a year away from home working on his TV shows was difficult for his family relationships.
Busia has been a guest on multiple episodes of No Reservations, including those filmed in Tuscany, Rome, Rio de Janeiro, Naples, and her home island of Sardinia. After being together for a decade, the couple finally broke up in 2016.
Anthony Bourdain’s Death And Cause
Anthony Bourdain has been labeled the “original rock star” of the culinary world. He has done everything from exposing the sordid underside of the restaurant industry to dining with President Obama in Vietnam. His popularity stemmed from more than just the fantastic food he prepared and consumed, setting him apart from other celebrity chefs. This further added to the tragedy of Anthony Bourdain’s passing.
Anthony Bourdain’s body was discovered at the Le Chambard Hotel in Kaysersberg-Vignoble, France, on June 8, 2018. His death was ruled a suicide. While filming an episode of Bourdain’s travel show Parts Unknown, fellow chef Éric Ripert came across his body. When Bourdain failed to show up for dinner the night before or breakfast the following day, Ripert became worried.

When Ripert finally tracked down Bourdain to his hotel room, it was already too late for the world’s most popular travel guide to return. As was later determined, Anthony Bourdain committed suicide by hanging himself with the belt from his hotel robe. Age-wise, he was 61.
Despite his enormous fame, Bourdain struggled in his youth. While working as a waiter in his early twenties, he acquired a heroin addiction and other issues that, in retrospect, should have been fatal. Even though Bourdain beat his heroin addiction, he never stopped fighting his mental health issues.
Though we will never know exactly what was going on in Bourdain’s thoughts at the time of his death, we can be sure that his internal conflicts were a contributing factor. Others were not as shocked by the news of his death as most of the public. However, today, most of his former friends simply miss him. There is a lot about him that people overlook.
