American celebrity chef, author, and travel documentarian Anthony Michael Bourdain (June 25, 1956 – June 8, 2018) was known for his shows that delved into the intersection of global cuisine, culture, and history. On June 25, 1956, Anthony Michael Bourdain entered the world in the Big Apple. Gladys (nee Sacksman) and Pierre Bourdain were his parents (1929-1987). Bourdain graduated in 1978 from The Culinary Institute of America. After that, he oversaw the kitchens of several New York City restaurants, including the Supper Club, One-Fifth Avenue, and Sullivan’s.

Personal Life

Bourdain went out with Nancy Putkoski in the 1970s when they were both students at Dwight-Englewood School. She was older than him, “part of a druggy crowd,” and “a nasty lady,” in his words. Bourdain finished a year early to join Putkoski at Vassar College, which had recently begun accepting men, even though she was a year ahead of him.

Between the ages of seventeen and nineteen, he attended school there. A short trip of only 15 minutes took him to the Culinary Institute of America after he graduated from Vassar. After being married for over a decade, the couple finally decided to split up in 2005.

Anthony Bourdain’s body was discovered at the Le Chambard Hotel in Kaysersberg-Vignoble, France, on June 8, 2018. His death was ruled a suicide. While filming an episode of Bourdain’s travel show Parts Unknown, fellow chef Éric Ripert came across his body. When Bourdain failed to show up for dinner the night before or breakfast the following day, Ripert became worried.

When Ripert finally tracked down Bourdain to his hotel room, it was already too late for the world’s most popular travel guide to return. As was later determined, Anthony Bourdain committed suicide by hanging himself with the belt from his hotel robe. Age-wise, he was 61.

Despite his enormous fame, Bourdain struggled in his youth. While working as a waiter in his early twenties, he acquired a heroin addiction and other issues that, in retrospect, should have been fatal. Even though Bourdain beat his heroin addiction, he never stopped fighting his mental health issues.

Though we will never know exactly what was going on in Bourdain’s thoughts at the time of his death, we can be sure that his internal conflicts were a contributing factor. Others were not as shocked by the news of his death as most of the public. However, today, most of his former friends simply miss him. There is a lot about him that people overlook.
