Bad Bunny has the most nominations for the 2022 American Music Awards, with eight. One of those is his first nomination in that category for artist of the year. If the Puerto Rican superstar wins in all eight types, he will tie Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston for the most AMAs won in a single year.
With six nominations each, Beyoncé, Drake, and Taylor Swift are close behind. That makes Bey and Swift the most-nominated women of the year. The two powerhouses compete in three categories: artist of the year, favourite female pop artist, and famous pop album.
Five nominations were given to Adele, Harry Styles, The Weeknd, and Future. Four, the group with the most nominations, is a tie between Imagine Dragons and Meskin. Jack Harlow and Terms both got four nods as well.
On Sunday, November 20, at 8 p.m. E.T. and 8 p.m. P.T., ABC will show the American Music Awards live from the Microsoft Theater at L.A. Live in Los Angeles. No one has been named as the host yet. Cardi B ran the show last year.
Artist of the year has seven nominees, up from five in each of the last five years. Swift got a record-setting ninth nomination, Drake got his sixth, and The Weeknd earned his fifth. Adele, Beyoncé, and Styles all got their third nominations; if you count the two nominations Styles got with One Direction. This was Bad Bunny’s first nomination in the category, as was said.
Swift is the artist who has won most artist of the year awards (six). She also has the most wins in the history of the AMA (34). This year, the AMAs added or brought back six categories: best K-pop artist, best Afrobeats artist, best rock song, best rock album, best touring artist, and best soundtrack. This is a big step forwards for K-pop and Afrobeats, which didn’t have their own AMAs categories before.
Because of the pandemic, when not many people went to concerts, a favourite touring artist hasn’t been on the road for the last two years. Last year, Favorite Soundtrack was removed because fewer people were going to the movies. This year, the AMAs didn’t have a category for favourite trending song, which “Body” by Megan Thee Stallion won last year.
